Very sore calf muscle when I run

I've just managed to get back into shape after a back injury and have been running 5 miles about 4 times a week. However in the last week, my left calf muscle gets very very sore about 2 miles into a run whether its on the road or along the banks of the canal where I live. The problem justs flares up with no advance warning that the muscle is in trouble, i.e., one minute I'm moving along with no problem and then I get this pain in the calf muscle which is a bit like a cramp. The pain reduces me to a slow jog/hop where I end up trying to keep my weight off the left leg. When I stop, I can walk but the muscle feels sore and about an hour after the run, it becomes very tender to touch. I've taken a few days off running and I was able to cycle with no ill effects but when I go running again, the problem flares up.

My runners are asiscs (I always buy these as I've never suffered muscle/joint pain while using asiscs), about midway through their lifespan and I stretch before and after each run. I've been running regularly for about 25 years but I've never experienced this type of pain before. Does anyone know what might be causing it as I don't want to have another extended period off running when I've just managed to get into shape again.

is the pain near the shin bone dave??? i used to get really bad pains in my calves too and it turned out to be shin splints. the physio said that running on hard surfaces were the main cause. might be worth checking out
