Ok so I am driving a 2001 E class 320CDI, I'm doing average 700 miles a week and this is only going to increase. I get 40mpg on a long motorway run but I think I need a car more frugal.

The only thing is I cant think of anything in the 5-6k stg budget that can add another 15-20mpg and be as comfy as the Merc. I love the car - its 9 year old and as tight as a drum, no squeeks no rattles.

Is there anything else that can take its place without giving me backache?

    Sneaky

With that kind of budget, I'd just keep the Merc. I dont think you'd get something as comfortable, but more fuel efficient.

Unless there's a problem with it, I'd keep it.

Nothing wrong with it DB - in fact I think its the best car I have owned despite a few electrical niggles but mechanically its smashing.

    Budget wise about 6k sterling

I would be thinking same as others keep the Merc....

but in the interest of giving an option...

what about an S80 2.5TDI? supposed to do 45MPG and are quite comfy.. and nicely specced...

and makes it in at asking €6500

Would you be buying it over here or in the UK?

If you buy it over here, it give's you a budget of around €6500. Allowing 4k for your own (I know its harsh, it may be worth more) gives you around €10500.

This would be a very comfortable car IMO. The 1.6 might be a little underpowered in the C5, but it would be very economical.

This has higher mileage, but it would be bulletproof.

Low mileage, comfortable and should be as economical as the Merc, if not more.

40 mpg is good. Keep the merc. Most other cars will feel inferior in terms of comfort & ability to cover miles effortlessly

Thanks lads. Buying in the UK and keeping it there as I've left craggy island. Like the x type

I don't think you will buy anything with that level of comfort that will return the extra mpg that you are expecting. You will end up sacrificing refinement for a bit of extra economy imo.

5-6k will buy you alot of fuel so keep the Merc.
