Ireland A to play in Tallaght Stadium

The IRFU also confirmed today that Tallaght Stadium in Dublin will host its first ever international rugby match when the Argentina A side, who are known as the Jaguars, will play Ireland A on Friday 27th November, 24 hours before Ireland play World Champions South Africa in Croke Park in the Guinness Series.

    Should be very interesting

Ridiculous. Should have gone to Ravenhill.

They're playing in Ravenhill against Tonga on the 13th November

All "A" games should alternate between Ravinhill and Thomand Park/Musgrave Park. The senior side will play all home games in Dublin so why not bring international rugby to the regions. The Sports Grounds in Galway could also host Women's and Underage Internationals.

I imagine its an attempt to increase profile in a non-traditional rugby area

Tallaght RFC have been developing well and this may help further

That's great, I hope they price the tickets well, get local schools onto it.
I thought Connaught fans / club might get some International A love money this year? Any international fixtures west O'the Shannon planned?

I'm not really a fan of having a 'brand' name for second teams, but England Saxons, Argentina Jaguars, All Blacks have NZ Maori etc. do sound "cooler" or easier to discuss for young / emerging national sides, they have their own identity now, and their own tournaments every few years.
I reckon "Ireland A" should be more than just a letter....

Has to be a cultural touchstone, uniting the 4 provinces, "Celts" feels a bit tawdry, any ideas?

can't wait to get there. been by the stadium a few times and it looks like a great little venue.

Lovely stadium, South Dublin County Council have done a great job with it. Will be great to see a rugby match played there. It'll probably piss off Thomas Davis even more now seeing that they tried to have the stadium blocked from being completed!

Would kind of agree with you but tbh I think it's a welcome move to see Tallaght get a game, anything that increases the profile of rugby should be considered.

    Tallaght is a region.
It is an extremely large part of the largest city on this island and will be a great advertisement for rugby union in the area which is traditionally more familiar with soccer, GAA and basketball.

Nothing "ridiculous" about this venue at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

They could have gone to Waterford in the south east of the country or Donegal/Sligo/Derry region in the north west or the midlands. In fact in most of the country there is non rugby playing areas..

An Ireland A game is hardly going to bring out the masses in a non traditional area.

There was a full international in Thomond last year that didn't bring out the masses either.

Brilliant IRFU marketing strategy. Probably the largest population centre in the country.

Imagine if they could get just 5% of the 10 -15 year olds there playing , it would increase the possibility of getting some new talent while breaking into a traditional football and gaa area.

I'd say there would be some tough mofos that would love the physical nature of the game.

Ok-doke. I'll come back to you after the game so and we can compare notes with previous 'A' internationals.

Nice to see something other then soccer (eventually) being played in Tallaght, but I doubt the locals will care.

Fairly pathetic comment, even more so when it comes from a moderator. I live 5 minutes from the stadium, have spoken with two 'locals' (as you sneeringly put it) and it was the first thing mentioned.

Will we see you at the game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

So when / where do you get tickets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,928 ✭✭✭crushproof

Great news the stadium, a real boost for the both the area and the IRFU itself. If they play their cards right with schools etc they'll have a bumper crowd.
The stadium is looking really well these days and it looked fantastic with a full house for the Rovers Bohs match.

But as Ruamar, fairly pathetic comment from Orizio. It'd say if it was an ordinary joke and not a mod who saying that they'd get a slap on the wrist with a warning of some sort.
Have you ever been to Tallaght Orizio...last I checked there was dozens of different sports being played. Typical sterotyping.

He has a fair point. Soccer is the dominant sport in that area.

i m a local i care, myself and a few of my mates are thinking of going , but yes there mainly talk of football and gaa here, but then we dont have the chance to rugby in the local area to often so kinda hard to tell

Whats the capacity of the Tallaght stadium?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

    6k I believe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭ruamar

They had 9000 plus in for the game against Real Madrid and the new stand is either complete or close to complete.

I'd imagine the capacity would be over 10000.

That was with temporary seats behind the goals for the madrid game. Those seats arnt there anymore. Though they migtht get them in for this if interest is high.

I doubt it, I don't live in Tallaght.

Not sure what your problem is, Tallaght isn't a well known rugby area, hence my remark. ;)

Tis only a short Luas Red Line trip away. You literally get off the Luas and walk 300m (in a straight line) to the stadium :)

Its about 5 minutes down the road from Templeville Road where I think previous Ireland A games have been held. The Irish women's XV have certainly played in Templeville Road recently.

Terenure, Templeogue and Rathmines are all on a direct bus route out to Tallaght.

Ladies rugby internationals are always played @St Marys ground bar that one that was played in Ashbourne due to snow last season ! and yes it is easy 5 mins from it!

Also, there are the following schools in the general area registered with Leinster Rugby for the schools competitions this year I would imagine that local interest could be quite high

    St Mark’s Community School
    St. Mac Dara’s Community College
    Tallaght Community School
    Greenhills College
    St. Aidens Community School
    Firhouse Community College
    Ard Mhuire School
    Scoil Carmel

The population of Tallaght is somewhere around the 90,000 mark which is probably more than the population of Donegal. Waterford? where would the IRFU get access to a stadium big enough to host the game there or in any of those other counties you mentioned. This isn't an anti country thing it's just pragmatic!

Think it's great to see this game here, The Leinster branch and the IRFU have pushed very hard to promote the game in Tallaght and this is a further commitment to this idea, I hope they pack it out and will hopefully get along myself!

I do feel that connacht should get an A game to help promote rugby there, but is the sports ground big enough?

    Capacity is 6k.

I go to nearly every Rovers home game and will be attending this Ireland A match too.

It was 10k for the Madrid game, including the south and north temporary stands behind the goals.
The east stand is now complete and open.

I think the game should have gone to one of the provincial grounds. Incentivise the aforementioned schools and clubs by reduced tickets prices and offers by all means but when 4 out of 5 Ireland/Ireland A matches are in Dublin over three different venues with only one outside of Dublin it's not exactly an advert for taking the game nationwide.

First of all, [edit] I think that you are unfairly mixing up Test and 'A' level rugby games. Different criteria for each level must be met for the various levels of the game so of course the bigger games such as those against the Wallabies and the Boks are going to be played in Dublin.

Last year a test was played against in Canada in Thomond Pk. This year its Fiji in the RDS. With this trend in mind the only other logical test ground I can think is Ravenhill making it the likely venue for a test next year if Lansdowne road is too large a capacity.

The Tonga 'A' game is in Ravenhill and the other is in an untapped region of Dublin. Thats pretty good promotion for the team and sport, I would say.
Last season, there were no 'A' games in November either.

There are also U19 games then next year during the 6N, there'll be other underage gamess as well as the women's internationals.

Is it true that Munster aren't getting any Irish games because of the poor attendence for Canada last year?

    No.
That bit of gossip is entirely untrue and baseless.
