we had one in the early to mid 80s, 807 CIK, in bright red like the one above.
I think it was a 1975 model. I remember the was another one around the area (north Wicklow), also red, and anytime my dad would pass they would flash each other :D
It was the first car i drove - just practising reversing and driving in and out of our drive, so i've fond memories of it - extremely comfortable car too.

My dad bought it from (Michael?) Costigan Motors in Temple Hill, Blackrock around 1983.

I think I remember seeing one in Castleisland once or twice in passing. Must keep my eyes peeled and camera at the ready! Maybe carcheologist is familiar with this one?

You should go to Romania, they are still rampant there.

This I think was my favourite, lexus lights go faster stripe with 240km/h written on it. I'm really not sure if it was a pisstake or the owner thought it was the mutts nutts??

Turkey too. They were made there until 1999, and where I was staying last time I was there (small village near Fethiye), literally every second car was a Renault 12.

In Romania, there is still a pickup and a crew-cab available. I also have an R12 estate mk2. Got it for nothing but it needs to be restored.

All the R 12's in this photo apart from the one without wheels are still functioning taxis. Photo taken a couple of weeks ago.

This is a bit unfair imo - its only Renault of late which has succumb to poor reliability . From what I can gather its most electrical now too - there was very little electric in an R 12 !

Yes, i take it BV reg gave it away? I should have more pics but i reckoned diverting the Irish r12 thread to Romanian r12 thread with one pic was enough :)

Yeah, copped the BV reg straight away! Spent a little time there a couple of years back. Nice little city, well parts of it anyhow!

I'll take a wild guess and say that was taken in Nouakchott?

The taxi regulator would have a field-day there, it seem as if the idea of health and safety hasn't caught on there yet so.:)

I take your point. I'm just judging by how fast old Renault's seem to have disappeared off the road in the past.

We had a R18 TD in the early 80's and it was plagued with electrical problems, as was a neighbours R20..
Mechanically it was a real tank but I'm convinced the electrics were made from disgarded christmas tree lights..

    @1948Wolseley

Yep, Nouakchott, well spotted, the Merc 190 graveyard of the future. The R12's look rough but compared to a few years ago the quality of whats on the road has improved dramatically. Can remember a few years ago getting into a R12 estate "clando" taxi, no windows whatsoever, only accesible through the rear right door and we had a torch out the back window so no Landcruisers would mow us down.

R12 still hugely popular in sub saharan Africa as taxis, unbreakable cars. Heres one from Morocco. (Not a taxi)

Not sure if this thread is still active, but here goes. I've been searching high and low trying to find a red renault 12 that I might be able to hire (inc driver/owner) for my wedding on 31st May 2013 in Kerry. My fiances family used to own a red r12 for the best part of 20 years during the late 70's through to the early 90's and I would love to have one for the day to take the bride to the church. I have found two R12's in kerry but unfortunately neither are red. I have found a red R12 in mayo & also one in galway but unfortunately it's a long way to have to bring a car. Any chance anyone out there would be aware of a still functioning red R12 in the Kerry/Cork/Limerick area? Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks
