Should The Jobs On the Referendum Be Prioritised For unemployed people?

I think they should be. There are quite a lot of people in otherwise good employment getting a few bob extra on the side working in the polling stations etc. These roles should be predominantly held for unemployed people as many of those doing it are taking the day off to free up the time.

The jobs are not all that difficult and people that are willing to learn will learn the requirements v quickly.

Needless to say, the way things have been going in Ireland recently I am sure many undeserving people are in those jobs.

Unfortunately the world isn't fair and never will be. I realised a few years ago that you've got to make things happen for yourself - no one is going to give you any help, e.g. a job because you're unemployed.

I agree but these jobs should have been advertised with preferences given to the unemployed. I have been told that quite a few well paid County Council people get a lot these jobs (in Meath anyway).

I am employed myself but have taken quite a pay hit recently and did the Poll Clerk job when I was a student. However I wouldnt look for one of these jobs even though I really need the money as I think that they should be set aside in as many cases as possible for unemployed people.

I could be wrong in this and the jobs could have been advertised in the Fas / dole offices but somehow I doubt it.

Yeah there never should be "jobs for the boys" or whatever. The public service try to stop this by advertising all their vacancies so everyone has an equal chance, but from what I hear certain jobs are ear marked for certain people so it's all just a charade.

What is your thinking behind the unemployed being given first refusal for these jobs? I don't think for a second they should be disadvantaged, but I think equity is better than favouring those who are currently unemployed.

As an aside I think poll clerks/counters get paid far too much in general compared with similar jobs elsewhere.

No disrespect but I think my posts were pretty obvious!

In any fair society, opportunities such as this should be given to people that are already out of work. The work doesnt need particular qualifications and it would give some unemployed people a financial and possibly a morale boost as well.

I agree with you regarding the pay.

I know I hinted at this in my first post, but as soon as you accept the world isn't fair and you have to rely on yourself to make things happen, things will be easier. :)

Thinking about how unfair and how ****ed the system is will just make you depressed, 'cause it's not going to change. There's too many vested interests, too many selfish people, too many retards.
