Just watched the pilot for this. It's really awful. Not a single snigger in the whole thing. Some horrible acting coming from the daughter aswell. This really had to have used fake canned laughter otherwise the audience musta been paid.

I reckon this will be axed very quickly along with accidentally on purpose, the 2 worst new shows i've seen so far imo

Was gonna give the pilot a watch..

.. but then saw TV.com has it's ratings in the 4's. TV.com is one site that it's registered users give any show decent marks and a rating this low after one episode is rare.

    So yeah, I'll pass!

Shame as I like David Koechner!

Yeah, i wouldn't even bother. I was really struggling to see it through to the end. i like koechner aswell but he dosn't even bring any redeeming qualities to this. I didn't really like back to you either but it was better than this. Its a bit like the "seinfeld curse" where none of the cast could get a good project for years.

I liked it. Nowhere near as good as Modern Family, The Middle, HIMYM, Gary Unmarried, TBBT or Two and a Half Men, but enjoyable and watchable... could possibly be very good if given an episode or two... the pilot was pretty much just setting the premise - which is good.

I didn't like the first 5 mins, but once they got to the house Grammer swung into action, the family dynamic took over and showed how clueless the dad was. It's not great, but deserves one or two more eps. to make sure.

I thought it was absolutely dire. If we needed any further proof that even Frasier can't save a crap show (I'm looking at you, "Back to You"), well, here it is...

I do agree though that again the pilot has to set up the premise, etc and is easily wasted. I'll probably watch another episode and make up my mind then but didn't think it was great. Grammer is essentially still a variation of Frasier but without engaging supporting characters to work with: the wife is bland and uninteresting, the son tries to be quirky but really isn't (I had just watched "The Middle" - the kid in that defines quirky :)) and the daughter is a total "OMG this sucks" airhead...

But the format itself also grates on my nerves - the excessive sitcom laugh track. The comedies I've enjoyed most this year, The Middle, Modern Family and Community, all lack it and are so much better for it.

The ratings for the pilot were strong - all of ABC's new comedies are doing well and as we know it's all about the ratings. It'll be interesting to see if the ratings will rise or fall next week. I can see people tuning in to Hank before they watch The Middle and Modern Family.

That could just be because of the "big name appeal" of Kelsey Grammer though - it'll be interesting to see just how much the ratings drop off this week...

Episode 2 was pretty bad. Gonna give it one more episode to improve drastically or I'm out.

Indeed. It's as formulaic as they come and pretty unfunny throughout. I'll try to get through the 3rd episode as well, but 2 very weak episodes in a row is not helping it. Oddly enough though, as bad as it is, I still think it is ever so slightly better than the car crash that is "Accidentally on purpose" (could only get through 1 episode of that crap) and "Cougar Town" (1.5 episodes...).

Oh God yes, much better than them. I laste 3 minutes into Accidentally on Purpose and 1.5 episodes of Cougar Town. The only reason I'm giving Hank the 3rd episode is the benefit of the doubt.

It doesn't seem like we have to bother with the 3rd episode - things are looking very bad for "Hank":
While there's been no word on the horrid Hank, ABC has ordered full season pick-ups for the rest of their Wednesday comedy block.

    http://www.tvsquad.com/2009/10/09/abc-orders-full-seasons-of-the-middle-modern-family-and-cougar/

Though somehow, "Cougar Town" got a full season order too... Go figure...

I do think the comment in that article about them switching The Middle and Cougar Town around time wise is a great idea, because The Middle and Modern Family would do even better if they were in the same hour.

Yep, that would be a good idea indeed (both shows have more in common than any of them do with "Cougar Town" and probably appeal to the same demographic) but will ABC realize that anytime soon?

If "Hank" is scrapped soon, they might bring forward "Scrubs" (or "the show formerly known as Scrubs" to be precise) and pair it with "Cougar Town", moving "The Middle" to be in the same hour as "Modern Family".
