Question re cereals

    Hi guys i'm sure this has been covered a million times before...

    I just wanted to ask about cereals. I have given up the sugary simple Carbs like special k and cornflakes and those.

    I usually have porridge on water and I find it great very filling. Some mornings I have 40g of shreddies and 100/150 mls of skimmed milk. Just the plain shreddies.. not frosted or whatever... How do they fare? I know they're processed but they do keep me full for just as long as porridge.. Are they ok or they actually full of simple sugars? Im trying to keep any of the carbs I eat complex plenty of fibre. Are shreddies ok?

    I used to eat bran flakes but found out they were mad sugary!

    porridge is by far the best :D shreddies and all bran are okay as long as you are not wheat intolerant ... if you feel fine and they are keeping you full i wouldnt worry

    Just check the packets, its no secret! ingredients are listed in order of greatest first. If sugar is high on the list its bad, they also use tricks like having several different names for sugar. So you could have a list saying
    wholewheat, sugar, barley malt, glucose syrup, honey.
    4 different names for "sugar" there, so 5 ingredients, this means to be top of the list there need only be 20.1% wholewheat and it could be the greatest ingredient, all the others just being under 20%, so in fact it could be 79% sugar! exagerrating the point of course, but sugar puffs are almost 50% sugar.

    Shreddies would be processed more than porridge but I think there is no added sugar in the plain ones.

    You can make pancakes with porridge oats, a good way to get some protein into you, and I find it less hassle than make than porridge or eggs on their own. This is a thread on them http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=2055002535

    Thanks a million guys it's just Im losing weight so I want to keep it as low sugar/low fat as possible. I think i will just stick to the porridge made with water. Keep it simple I guess.. Thanks for the help and the pancake suggestion Rubadub.

    Oh one more question.. My aim is to plan for the following.

    3 portions of carbs a day ie
    • Porridge
    • brown rice
    • Ryvita

    5/6 portions of fruit and veg per day

    1 portion of meat
    3 portions of dairy per day
    very little sat fat.. keeping it to a tsp of virgin olive oil per day is this ok?

    My typical day would be the following.

    Porridge
    orange juice

    soup (low fat veg or mushroom)
    2 ryvitas
    low fat yoghurt

    Snacks: apple banana weight watchers biscuit.

    Dinner: meat, veg, rice or noodles, low sat fat sauce.
    Yoghurt afterwards.

    Supper: 40g porridge oats on water. (If I'm hungry)

    This seam ok? I've got about 60 pounds to lose after losing about 50 over last 1.5 years

    hi, well done on weightloss so far .. its very hard to know what to say about your diet, everything in there is very healthy but I can see a few small problems. Are you losing weight at a rate you are happy with? if so then dont worry about changing anything ....

    Breakfast - porridge is great, whole fruit would be better than the juice ...
    you might be better to include some salad and tuna or chicken or something at lunch time .. ryvita and soup ok though ...
    snacks - ok and you could have some good fats too by having nuts
    dinner ok - watch noodles though ..
    supper is ok, better than a bowl of coca pops but a small bit of cottage chese might be better ..

    overall - low fat is not a bad thing, but there is nothing wrong with good fats and you NEED to have some - focus on nuts, lean meat, oily fish etc ... carbs are ok if low GI and protein is essential ...

    Thanks a mill... not losing much the last few weeks so I'm thinking of changing the routine up a bit. I love salad so should try to include it more. Yeah on the noodles. I only eat whole grain noodles and I weigh them to make sure of how much I'm eating.

    Will def try more salad. I always have a fear of nuts. My mum planted ideas that nuts were really bad for me in my head. I know it's the sat fat thats bad. But I guess nuts are great for omega s and such. Which nuts would be the best?

    there are mixed ground nuts and seeds you can buy in most supermarkets and in health food shops that i think are great, its Linwoods (dont know if this is advertising so mods delete if you want. i DONT work for Linwoods) sprinkle in soups, salads, yoghurt, omelettes. they dont really taste that much, actually quite nice, give a bit of crunch

    Well done on the fat loss so far. I have a few opinions on your diet however.

    First off you say you have 3 portions of carbs a day (porridge, brown rice and ryvita). All great choices. But you then say you have 5/6 portions of fruit and veg a day - they're also carbs! Now I'm not saying give any of them up, they're all healthy foods and nutritous, but just so you know what you're eating.

    You then say you have one portion of meat. That is WAY TOO LITTLE in my opinion. You need protein in your diet, almost as much protein as carbs, if not the same. You should try and get some source of protein in at every meal, eg. a boiled egg or two for breakfast and some fish/chicken/beef/eggs for lunch with a salad.

    I'd cut out the orange juice as it's full of sugar in the morning. Have a glass of water instead.

    Soup is good but is it homemade? Any soup you buy will be full of salt and other crap, basically.

    Bananas can be quite calorie dense for a fruit. Weight watchers biscuit? Give it up. Try and cut out the sauce in your dinner, or at least make it yourself from scratch.

    And then you have porridge as supper? Eating so many carbs late at night won't give you the chance to burn them off. And then your body is going to store those unburnt carbs as fat.
