    Hi,

I just have a quick question, hopefully someone might know the answer.

I'm currently on the Pill and normally go to my GP for prescription, which is kind of a pain cause I have to pay €50 to see the doctor just to get him to fill the prescription, then pay for the pill in the Chemist - all in all it cost nearly €100 every 5/6 months. I'm just wondering, is it possible to get a prescription at Family planning clinics does anyone know?

    Thanks :)

Hardly a huge price to pay, considering how much bringing up a child costs.

I spend a fortune on johnnys, not the cheap ones off the internet either.. and i consider them money well spent.

It's money well spent really. Also, part of the reason they want you to go back every six months is to check your blood pressure and how you are feeling on the pill. As you know, there are links to thrombosis and other such illnesses that should be checked pretty regularly. A pill check up twice a year really isn't anything to complain about.

Yep, but you still have to pay. There's no way to get free contraception in Ireland unless you qualify for a medical card. €20 a month is hardly a lot of money to stay safe, tbh.

If you seriously can't afford to pay - abstinence is free.

The cost at a family planning clinic is roughly the same but they do discounts for students.

I got an I.U.S. fitted and it cos me in total 380 and that was for 5 years which I thought was great value for money.

It's pretty much the same price, without the added bonus of being able to ask about other things you may need checked. The only saving really for me is that the contraception itself is €4 pm cheaper from the clinic than bringing the prescription to the chemist.

OP are you in a college?because i only had to spend 10 quid to see the doc in DCU. Also, if you buy your prescription all at once it's far cheaper; took me years to work that one out:o

Think of it as an investment in your future.

I don't know if this is everywhere, but I know that in some doctor's you can make an appointment to see the nurse and who can check your bp and write the prescription, costs about €20. Anyone else heard of this?

I don't think the nurse can write your prescription. She may well check your blood pressure and then get the doctor to leave out a prescription for you though. I've often called my doctor if I couldn't make the appointment I'd arranged and he just left a new prescription for me but as far as I'm aware, a nurse cannot write it for you.

    Could be wrong though :)

I often just call my doc to ask for a repeat prescription - if they saw you 6 months ago they sometimes will give you another prescription for maybe 3 months. Doesn't cost anything, just collect it when they have it written.

Perhaps you might consider the bar?

prescription is around €50, but it lasts years, so you save €'s.

In relation to an earlier post dit also does medical appointments for free.

Shop around and see what doctors can get you the best deal. Most will have a different rate for check ups.

My doc will just leave it at reception for me and not charge. She only charges for 1 a year

I always get my moneys worth. While you are there get him to address another problem or for advice. Like for example the last time I got my doctor to check my rectum even though there was nothing wrong with it.
