Driving Iron

I use a 2 iron a fair bit and it works for me but tbh the lower irons and driving irons can be tough to get consistency from. Some guys I know use recovery woods off the tee and get good distance and control off them

See if you can get a hold of a club from a mate or at a range and see how you get on before buyng anything

Ive a Mizuno MP Fli Hi 2 iron in my bag. Distance wise I can carry it as far as my driver but with a bit more accuracy (on a good day).
Really good club for tight tee shots. Pretty nice off the deck too

What position in the stance do you play it from ?

i have a controller Driving Iron, something me oul fella bought off the tv about 6 or 7 years ago.
When i hit it sweet its as good as a 3 wood -sometimes better.
    Id recommend ...
but best of all shooting from the rough. its very like a recovery iron with the added head weight and cuts through to the ball -

if you can carry this as far as your driver there's something wrong,i presume you're a high enough hcp'r and slice the hell out of your driver, nice of the deck too you say ,give me a rescue any day instead

I also have one of the Fli-Hi clubs about 15 degrees, cant think of what it is exactly. agree that its a fantastic club, very easy to hit, and very easy to hit off the deck. its somewhere close to a 3 wood for me distance wise. Would recommend to anyone struggling with the woods.

I'm struggling for consistancy with the driver and in my trawl of the net to come up with solutions I came across driving irons like this http://www.ngcgolf.com/moreinfo/controller_II_driving_irons/controller_II_driving_irons.cfm . Does anyone have any thoughts on them or are they a gimick ? I know it's all about sorting out my swing but as I hit my irons/hybrids pretty well it looks tempting.

I am having difficulty finding a review for this club. At least one that's not linked to the site. Looks like a TV gimmick to be honest.
Although just spotted that one poster below is saying he likes the old version.... so perhaps.

So why not just use your hybrid off the tee?
I use my 19* hybrid and 3wood off the tee on a good few holes in my (tight) course. If I say so myself, Im an excellent driver of the ball with my driver (:D) but I use the hybrid and 3 wood when there is no benefit to being that extra 30 yrds closer...to the trees.

What loft is on your current hybrid and what distance do you get from it?

Have a 3i cobra baffler, hit it about 180/190 yrds. Wondering if I could get a bit more out of the driving iron.

    Sounds decent enough.
How far do you drive it with a driver?
Do you use the 3i off the deck/rough much?

It might make more sense to swap that for something with less loft so you can use it off the tee and from the deck.

I'd hit the driver around 240/250 when I catch it right but not as frequently as I'd like. I do use the baffler a lot off the deck and am very happy with it. I think if I could consistently get over 220 and land in the short stuff I'd be happy enough, that's why I was looking at the driving iron. Would a 2i hybrid get me that far ?

My 19% rescue goes ~200M off deck and a bit more off the tee, if I need anything more than that I use the 3W.

Maybe a 17% hybrid might be worth looking into then, thanks.

I have a taylor made that I generally swap for a wedge(sand) in winter carry it about 220 its 16 degrees and goes about 20yds less than 3w and my driver carry's 260 if that helps any

tend to use it on holes where my 4 rescue(205yds carry) would have been used in summer,
it gets hit off some tees where 4 rescue would not get me out far enough for a dogleg or to a favourite yardage or 2nd shots to par 5's when greens are a bit softer and can hold it

I just picked up a set of Taylor Made Burner irons with a 3 and 4 Hybrid rescue/driver iron.... and I can honestly say that they are superb, I could not my 3 and 4 irons before, but these Hybrids are super easy to hit straight and long.

Are you looking for a driving iron, Jimbling? I got one in the golf shop out the Tramore Road a few months ago. It's a fine job. A JBoss. Good size head and a lovely ting off it - like a driver. Great for distance too.

I think I paid around €30 for it.

Na, not really... just going through a rough patch with the Driver. My issue is that if I'm not hitting my driver well, then that applies to my 3 wood and 5 wood also.
So, I have only got my 21 Rescue iron to fall back on. Not sure if I should get something like a Driving Iron or a 15 Rescue to fall back on. Basically to replace the 3 wood.
Can the Driving Iron be hit from the fairway easily enough?

Not really. I tried it a few times when I was messing around but no good. Designed really for use off the tee. Irons like the Mizuno Fli-Hi are designed more for use off the fairway more than as driving irons. I have a few Cleveland Halo rescue clubs and I would argue that they're the best hybrids ever produced by any company ever. Great off the tee, fairway and even fairly heavy rough.
