Big Perch, Pike

    Hi,

Goin for some big perch, but will take a pike, this weekend in a loch on a river near the border.

Was thinkin of just feeding with groundbait and using a worm on a float or sinking a big weight and ledgering a worm just off the bottom. Will be spinnin with a few mepps all the while.

Anyone catching decent perch lately? can only seem to get the small ones. If you've caught a decent one what did you get it on?

    Cheers

A size 3 black fury mepps is a fantastic perch taker, I've caught plenty of 1lb+ perch on them (trout will sometimes take them as well though, so remember the season is over most places and they have to go back :)).

For big perch in particular, nothing beats minnows.

If you have to use artificials, then the ones with wiggly tails come out tops, and soft plastic lures of 1 1/2" to 2" either spun or on a jighead are best.

If you are going to fly fish for big perch, the wiggly tail is imitated by a wooly bugger type pattern with the marabou tail doing the job nicely. Either olive or white/red or white/orange. Google an image of a Hanningfield Lure to see the arrangement. They are the best I have discovered. Only chartreuse comes close on some occasions.

Assume you're imitating a small baby perch (white colouration, red/orange fins) with the Hanningfield Lure look, or a crayfish (gills vibrating on side and backwards movement are perfectly imitated by wooly bugger pattern. Those preferred big perch food items they don't like to refuse.

the mepps is great for hungry perch, but they will take anything if in the mood even wet flies.
