Car failed NCT after pre-NCT test

Put my car through a pre-NCT service and check three weeks ago. This week it failed the NCT because of a failed CV joint. Brought it back to the garage and they said there was no way they could have spotted it and charged full whack for fixing it - parts and labour.

The garage maintains that it could have happened at any time in the past 3 weeks and they couldn't have seen it without taking the axle apart. This sounds like BS to me. If the wear is visible to the eye now, it must have been showing signs of wear and tear three weeks ago. Surely checking the CV joint is standard for a pre-NCT test?

    Am I being unreasonable here?

Did it fail for a cv joint or cv boot?

Just for your own reference, there is no such thing as a "pre-NCT" test. The best pre test you can do, is put it through the NCT. If it fails, you know exactly what it failed on, and if it passes, then happy days. A re-test only costs €27.50 or something.

Sorry to here that OP, just goes to show what a waste of money pre-NCT checks are, but a lot can happen in 3 weeks.

Unless they took the car for a good spin the chances of spotting a CV joint gone aren't good. But usually the boot fails first which leads to the joint going. How old is the car and have you had it from new? Someone before may have had a boot go and not got it repaired correctly.

And the added bonus is it only costs €50.

Thanks for the replies. I'll put it down to experience then and avoid pre-NCT tests in future as the scam they obviously are!

Its not that anybody is scamming you but simply look at it from mechanics point of view. Does he fix everything thats partially worn and therefore borderline for the NCT and charge you a few thousand or does he make an educated guess at what is good enough to pass to save you money but take the risk of you coming back giving out about having failed. The whole idea of a pre test is nosense for these reasons and it is always best to take it to the NCT centre and let them decide what needs doing and it only costs an extra €27!
You cannot really blame the garage when you must have gone in asking for the car to checked for the NCT. Its your mistake really and if you had asked the question on here you would have been told not to do it.
How much did you pay for the pre test and what did they replace?
