Getting rid of car

Hey folks,

Despite trying my best efforts making some calls and placing ad on adverts.ie I haven't been able to shift my old car for a few quid that broke down.. it was down to location I guess and also that the car is 1996, so pretty old.

So now I am going to contact someone and see can they take it away for free.

But I was wondering with regards cancelling tax, etc. what do I need to do? If someone takes the car away do they give me something on the spot to say it is being scrapped? and then do I give that to Gardai, and then get something from Gardai for the tax office?

it's a vw polo. Timing belt is gone, and more than likely serious engine damage.. it looks like it would be too costly for someone to fix as the resell is around 700-800euro range. Ah well!

I even rang up someone who had similar car for sale for parts on Buy and Sell and she had no luck selling it. Okay it was an automatic whereas mine was manual, but Buy and Sell are looking for 20 euro or something to advertise for cars, so it didn't seem worth it.

So what now in terms of cancelling tax? Tax is due on it as of 1st oct.

You could give donedeal.ie a go if you fancy one last try at shifting it. If otherwise you are planning on scrapping it then I am very sure you can reclaim the outstanding roadtax.

Under the End of Life Vehicles (ELV) regulations, authorised facilites take back vehicles for scrap free of charge. It was brought in a couple of years ago. They can't charge you for scrapping it, but may charge you (prob around 30/50 euro) to take it away. There's a list of authorised facilities around the country.

They will give you a certificate of destruction for it. If you still have a few months of tax paid on it, you can apply to your local authority to have it refunded. If the tax is out, I think (not sure though) there's a box on the back of the renewal form where you can tick to say it's been scrapped. If you send the cert with it you should be fine.

I had a similar problem about a year & a half ago. As a favour I agreed to try to get rid of a 95 VW Vento for a friend who had moved abroad & his mother wanted to get rid of it out of her driveway.

I had no luck selling it & couldn’t even give it away. I tried numerous car dealers etc who might want it for parts who weren’t interested. I tried South Dublin County Council & Dublin City Council who said that the scrappage scheme was no longer in operation, & advised me to sell it for scrap in a scrapyard. I was told that I could bring it to a recycling plant somewhere in Clondalkin.

In the end to avoid all the hassle one of the dealers that I had been talking to gave me the number of a guy with a towtruck who towed the car away to a scrapyard. He posted the Certificate of Destruction to me & I sent that & the Vehicle Registration Cert to the Dept of Transport in Shannon.

I paid him €50 to tow it plus he got to keep whatever money he got from the scrapyard, but to be honest I was just glad to get rid of it. I could have towed it myself but didn’t want the bother so for it was worth paying the €50. So, OP if you can drive it or get it to a scrapyard yourself you may make a bit of money for it.
