Right all, my buddy is moving to one of the UK offices and wants to buy a car over there. His idea is to drive it for a year or so over there and bring it back avoiding VRT and not losing anything on it if he wanted to sell it. He's thinking maybe a 320d msport, A4 2.0 tdi or C220 cdi. I might be in a similar situation shortly so i'd be interested in peoples thoughts. I know there isn't a definite answer and that you cant be guaranteed not to lose but is this strategy of buying something decent better than going for something cheaper? Just looking for opinions...

no suggestions but just make sure when choosing he knows that when he brings it back here he cant sell it for 12 months if he wants to avoid vrt

Buy something that has already gone through its initial depreciation but still expensive. Best chance he will ever get to drive a very special car at small cost.

Premium badge cars are not as cheap as they were over there. I would be going for something like a Mondeo ST TDCi myself that has already taken a fair wack in depreciation at this stage.
