I don't mean to derail here but how do people find the mini U-locks? I need something for a new bike and I've been trying to decide whether to get the full sized Kryptonite New York or one of the smaller ones. Smaller ones obviously appeal for weight reasons.

Is the idea that you use this mini with a chain? Or is it just a smaller version of a normal U-lock? I've seen bikes around with just the mini. How easy is it to lock up with one of them (e.g. around Dublin city centre)? Your options have to be more limited as you'd have to get the bike way closer to the fixed object, right?

The problem with the Fahgettaboudit Mini is that it's heavy, not bike mountable, and too small to fit around certain types of railing or pole using the preferred "through rear triangle" approach.

The other Kryptonite Minis are more practical, but less secure.

Ah, okay. So maybe the Kryptonite Evolution Mini is what I want if I'm willing to sacrifice a degree of safety for practicality.

I'll look up some reviews. Thanks.

I picked up a normal Kryptonite Evolution Mini for 45, and frankly, if anyone gets the bike out of that.... well done.

What is the advantage of the Fahgettaboudit lock over the regular orange mini one? What makes it nearly twice as hard to crack?

    Shackle girth.

Oldpal, how mini is that Bulldog lock? Like, compared to a standard D lock. Really want one of these to save me lugging a chain everywhere, but don't want to mount it on my frame. Would the Bulldog tuck into your belt to carry around, or would the pitbull be better?

Want a small, easy to transport lock, that's light enough but can still lock through the rear triangle to a standard (road sign thickness) pole - and I'm broke.

Nearly tempted to splash out for the evo mini, but might be too small..

FWIW, this is what I use and still no problems - touch wood. The 300 is 2mm thinner but I use the flex also. Well worth the extra 8 euro

This is the lock I have. I used a chain for the front wheel too.

I think the mini would be too small for me as I lock the back wheel and frame to the post and sometimes that's a struggle.

Civilian_Target, Where did you find your lock for €45

City Cycles on Blackhall place have them for €45, save on shipping and waiting time.

I use two fahgettaboudit minis and they are HEAVY. They are also awkward wrt rails so it takes some imagination and persistence, but I want to stay owning my bike so I put up with the minor inconvenience.
They are noticeably thicker than the evo mini but I don't know if the extra size directly relates to extra security. Personally I can't picture any Dublin thieves getting through an evo mini, never mind a fahgettaboudit!

The Fahgettaboudit is a good size for the standard Sheffield stands and the Sheldon method of locking (circing the rear wheel inside the rear triangle). As said above, its shackle is too narrow for most lamp posts, so I find it great for locking in town, but outside town, I use a Kryptolok lock if I need to use a lamp post and use the Fahgettaboudit in some way in conjunction with a Kryptoflex cable.
