    Hi,

I bought a new Compaq laptop about 2 months ago. All was working well until last weekend it decided to not boot up. I get as far as entering my username and password and then the blue windows screen appears and says 'please wait' and then nothing else happens. I left it like this overnight, I tried entering F10, 11 and 12 when booting up but nothing seems to work. I'm afarid now that I may have to reinstall windows (i don't mind the data end as I have very little on the hard drive since it is so new) but I don't have a reinstall Cd (Compaq didn't ship one with it)!! I do however, have a reinstall cd for my 1 yr old Samsung laptop (also Vista) so i am wondering will I be able to use this to re-install Vista by using the product key on the underside of the Compaq? All views and opiniosn on best way to proceed here are welcome.

have you tried pressing F8 when the computer starts and choosing last known good configuration?

If you want to reinstall Vista, there may be a recovery partition on the hard drive already. I'm not too familiar with the boot options on Compaq laptops so you might want to check their support pages for info on how to access it...

They dont ship the discs with the laptops anymore, u do however get documentation to advise you to create a recovery disc/diagnostic disc from the parition on your harddrive for your vista recovery :o

The blue screen you see, is this an error screen? Can you access the OS in safemode?

Try this. Or chuck it into safe mode.

Safe mode is the OS, operating with limited drivers and processes.

    Hi collieb,

Get a copy of Vista Repair CD (Google It) from the internet and run the repair startup option. The Hive me be damaged and need to be rebuilt. I see this every day. That or the registry is damaged. The blue screen should have given you an error code at the very least. Also tapping F8 on the compaqs durig startup will give you a boot list. The 1st of which should reference a refair option. If you can even get into safe mode with command prompt and issue the below it may help.

    c:\>chkdsk /R

I think its a hung driver.

Getting a boot CD and running a system restore to a previous date should resolve any driver issues from something installed in past few days.Any Vista CD or DVD from a firends PC will do the job.
