    Well this is utter Bullshit:

    http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/System_Menu_4.2

This rubbish is actually costing nintendo from getting my money. I've been dying to try some wiiware games but can't because I'll lose the ability to play smash bros and now this. **** them.

There'll be a "safe" updater soon enough :pac:

I really hope so because my Wii is getting loads of use as an emulation machine. If not I might just have to take a saturday off an soft mod the xbox :( Pity because the wiimote is great for nes games.

The gbatemp forums are always buzzing after an update and usually have updaters pretty soon.

I'll have a look out for it. I think the holy grail is custom firmware, ala PSP so hopefully this will get the hackers working on a workaround.

I haven't actually seen what this update does (other than kill homebrew) to actually improve the wii. They usually tart up the menus or add something with an update.

I am surprised it has taken this long for them to do it though, maybe they have seen how much of a dent flash cards have made to the DS and could see the Wii going the same way.

Hacking going from forums and people hacking it for themselves, to money grabbers knocking out software / modding etc to cash in.

Its always going to be an arms race, and usually one the hackers will win.

Retr0gamer, I feel your pain, but fairly sure Ninty don't. My wii sits happily unable to get online and safe from evil updates, unless I stick in the wrong sneaky disc.:pac:

Lets hope so, having the same problem with the PSP, can't buy Gran Turismo for it as it requires FW 6.0, and then I lose all my lovely emulators!

Well on the PSP you can download a hacked version of the games that will run. So in other words Sony aren't combating piracy at all and promoting downloading their games. Just hope there's a work around before some good wii games come out that require the update. I sure as hell am not giving up my secret of mana save game :)

I haven't actually used my wii for any piracy. I'd love to buy some wiiware games but Nintendo won't allow me access to the wiiware store and I've been tempted to just download them except I really would like my money to go to the developers. It's very frustrating.

    good info here: http://hackmii.com/2009/09/wii-menu-4-2-a-lack-of-imagination/#more-742

I'd wait for a new hackmii installer. These guys know more about the inside of the wii than nintendo themselves!

There really is no point going through this hassle with a Wii if you're just using it as an emulator. Just softmod an old xbox. It's easy and the only purpose original xboxes have now :pac:

Is it really that much hassle to get homebrew channel up and running?
Id much prefer playin retro games with the wiimote and to get some more use outta my wii as I havnt got a new game for it since Madworld which wasnt bad

Unless you have the right game I found the xbox softmod a total pain in the whole. I stopped when I realised I needed a TV and a monitor in close proximity and wasn't prepared to drag my very heavy 32 inch up the stairs. Wii softmodding was a doddle in fairness although I think you need twilight princess for it still.

Hey retro, I think its ok to update now once you've installed the latest version of the homebrew channel. See here

Install the new homebrew channel and the official 4.2 update won't get rid of it (since they simply changed the title ID!)

Thanks for the heads up. Think I'm going to give soft modding of the xbox another go anyway since I've a new TV upstairs to make it easier.

Ah I see. I tried to Hot swap on my first attempt and ended up locking the damn harddrive. If you're going to try it that way be careful. As if the drive gets locked you can't unlock it (Without some electronic wizzadry)

Luckily I had another xbox which I was a bit more cautious with. Went on ebay and bought a copy of Splinter Cell and a memory card with the exploit preloaded. Infinitely easier once you have the two of them. About as easy as softmodding a PSP with a pandora battery.

If you can't get it working give me a shout and I'll try and get the game and memory card to you. Haven't seen them in a while but I'm sure I should be able to dig them out.
