Laptop switches on automatically

    Hi,

    HP Pavilion dv2000...
Every time I shut down this laptop, it stays off for 4-5 seconds then starts up again. This only occurs when the power cable is attached. If I unplug the power cable, it does not switch on automatically. If I plug the power cable back in again, the laptop switches on automatically.

I am using Vista. I have looked through the BIOS but there are not many options in it and nothing that looks vaguely like an "auto-on-when-ac-inserted" option. I have also tried installing the latest BIOS version (F.39, I had F.22) from the HP site but there is no difference. All options appear to be exactly the same! I have also tried unplugging the Ethernet cable and switching off the wireless (a colleague told me that some laptops switch on when they detect network activity). Needless to say, I have also Googled it and had a good look around the HP site with no luck so far.

Is there a setting in Vista I don't know about? This is hardly normal behaviour for laptops, is it? Any other suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Brian

Network adaptor was my first thought also.

Try going into the device manager and check the properties of your Ethernet controller. Mine has a 'wake from shutdown' option.

Thanks, good idea, I hadn't checked that setting. Didn't solve the problem though. There was a 'power management' tab on the adapter's properties page and there was an "Allow this device to wake the computer" option but it was already unticked. I tried changing a couple of settings and saving changes (just in case for some reason that option was not properly set), but same thing happens!

It seems to have something to do with the power lead being connected.
