    Hi,

Is there a date that the kids have to be 4 by to start Junior Infants. Most countries have a 1st April or 1st June date, but I can't find anything for Ireland other that the statement that they must be 4.

in the bigger schools, the principal might insist that children only start school if there are 5. however in smaller schools, they can take them earlier. best thing is to talk to the principal of the school and see what the story is.

This is from the Department of Education website - it says that children must start by the age of 6 but cannot start unless they are 4 the year they start school. To be honest I think it's way better for children to start at 5 or very close to 5. I think under 4 and a half in September is too young for most kids, no matter how bright they are. The first year in school has a lot of social changes which younger children often find really difficult.
