Happy Hour

Last Thursday a number of pubs in Dublin offered pints of Guinness at a reduced cost for a set number of time (I think most were around 6-8/9).

Is this not tantamount to a happy hour which is against licensing laws ?

If you had to pay in to the premises, then possibly not. Then again, I am not a licencing expert.

We were talking about this aswell. The pub we were in, sold Guinness for €2.50 between 5.30 and 6.30 ?!?

oh and we didnt pay to get in, just a normal pub. Does it make a difference that it was only Guinness ( one brand ) that was cheaper ??

I believe, but could be wrong, that this was not a Happy Hour scenario, due to the fact that the offer was just on Guinness. It was more a "promotion".

No it was regular everyday pubs doing it although there were some pubs that were ticketed events and Diageo were running door staff.

If this did break licencing laws, how would there be any proceedings ?

Hmm I see. But this never happens though. You never get offered pints of other beers at a reduced price for a set short period of time. Presumably because pubs know (or at least did or they thought they did) that it's against the happy hour laws. No ?

AFAIK, a pub cant supply booze at a reduced price during any limited period on any day unless, bizarrely, they sell it at that reduced price for the whole day. So its fine to have a Happy Day, you just cant have a Happy Hour! Which is why you are gettting the proliferation of the € pints all day etc...

So, I would have thought Guinness' Arthurs Day thing was illegal.
