if you have an old standard one that will do.
you can get one that will record pause etc, bit more expensive though,
Humax Foxsat HDR seems to be popular ,
have a look here for some pionters.
    and here

The old SKY box is the cheapest option (if you already have one). You'll need to tune in some channels that aren't already on the SKY epg but thats easy enough to do. You can then set up your favourite Freesat channels for ease of access as most of whats on the SKY epg won't be available to you when you take out the SKY card and it can get annoying scrolling through dozens of channels (most of which are sh1te anyway) to get one you want to/can watch.

The other option is to get a generic FTA box in the likes of Lidl, B & Q etc which will give you dozens of FTA channels.

Finally, and this is the way I went, get a dedicated Freesat branded receiver that will give you all the Freesat channels and the 7 day epg. I went for a basic Grundig model for the kids room, used an old Sky box for the wife's viewing in the sunroom and got a Humax HD PVR for myself in our sitting room. The Humax has all the features of the SKY HD box, i.e. pause and rewind live tv, recording programmes/series and access to BBC and ITV HD channels. I got the Grundig box (and my dish, lnb, cable etc) off Satellite.ie and the Humax PVR from Richersounds.ie.

    cheers homer
    i shall take a look -
I may have to keep the old receiver
Benefits of the Freesat + box is it would be a BBC Region so BBCi etc would work, HD, Rewind, Record all that jazz

Negatives Don't seem to power a Motor or be good for say looking at stuff on Astra 19 like Eurosport or CNBC, or watching lee majors in The Fall Guy in French! so the space beneath the tv will be cramped

    Many thanks

I believe the HDR can do all those things in non-Freesat mode.

Picked up the Humax HDPVR in Richer Sounds, Belfast yesterday for 249 sterling from a very helpful guy there. His mouth dropped when I told him the price down south.

Tip: If they check the computer system and they seem to be out of stock, it may be worth asking the guy to check upstairs. It seems that their inventory system is not always correct.

Also worth noting if there are any warranty issues, that they are affiliated with Philips Store in Dame Street, Dublin.

Off home now to set it up !
