    Hi,

This could have been posted before. I just wanted to know is there a fee to use the atms over in the UK or should I just get the sterling before I go.

    Thanks,

There will probably be a fee but it all depends on your bank.

99% of the time you'll be best off using an ATM rather than getting sterling.

In the UK some ATMs charge a fee (regardless if your account is UK or Irish). But the ATM will always inform you in advance. The fee can vary from £1 to £2.50 on average. But most ATMs, especially bank ones are free.

I get my sterling from the ATM in Heathrow when I go over. Exchange rate is set by my bank (Ulster) and they don't charge me any commission, so works out best.

But check with your bank what charges they apply.

I'm not sure about other banks but the ATMs of Nationwide UK are usually free of charge to use to withdraw cash. Some of the others, especially the ones located in shops, garages and supermarkets, can charge your bank, and then they usually pass the charge on to you. I think you'll still be charged a conversion fee, that's built in to the exchange rate, I don't think that can be avoided.

If you bank with Ulsterbank, you won't pay charges in any Natwest or Royal Bank of Scotland ATMs.
