Im at a loose end, and would like to know what the good people of this forum feel are the top 5 of the last 9/10 years? I'd be interested to see how they compare to mine:

    #1: Corrales v Castillo I (2005)
    #2: Pacquiao v Morales I (2005)
    #3: Vasquez v Marquez II (2007)
    #4: Barrera v Morales III (2004)
    #5: Trinidad v Vargas (2000)

    Do share...

Believe it or not, Arthur vs Gomez would have a place in my top 5

Kevin Mitchell vs. Carl Johannson in March '08 was a beauty

I really think that the first bout between MAB and Morales was the best, and one of the best
of the decade. MAB-Morales 1 was ahead of Pac-Morales 1 IMO.

well no particular order and I know I'm missing out loads but these were all great fights

    Holyfield cooper
    Bika Codrington

Love these sort of threads, although I can't possibly restrict it to 5.

All the above fights are excellent (Both Holyfield fights were in the early 1990's though) and I would add in Sithchatchawal / Monshipour (absolutely brutal), Arce / Hussein, Trinidad / Mayorga (very entertaining even if a bit one-sided), Trinidad / Reid.

My personal favourite of all time is Barrera / Morales 1.

I also believe the last 10 years has seen more 'great' fights than any other decade, which will probably irk the rose-tinted brigade, until they actually look at the fights mentioned.

Anyway I'll probably have more to add to this list.

    Gatti v Ward 1
    Corrales v Castillo 1
    Jamie Moore v Mathew Macklin
    Dunne v Cordoba
    Rogan v Skelton

They might not all have been the technically best but they were the ones i got the best kick out of.

Froch v Pascal deserves a mention too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,368 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Two good fights were Oscar-Shane @147 lbs in 2000 and Hatton-Philips @140 lbs in 2003.
The Mickey Ward-Emanuel Burton fight in 2001 was brilliant.
    Add in PBF-Burton in 2000

yes - never seen so many punches thrown ward was exhausted by the tenth

For sheer mastery and skill and all around genius, the PBF win over Corrales
in 2001 is hard to match. It wasn't competitive, but it was boxing at its finest

    Barrera v Morales 1
Barrera v Hamed (that was this decade right?)
    Gatti v Ward 1

and just for the laugh, Khan v Prescott :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,368 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Finally Hamed was exposed and the myth that he hit like a welter was shattered.

One not yet mentioned. Super Fight:D

Shane Mosley v Ricardo Mayorga (2008)

The time of the fight stoppage was 2:59 round 12. Mosley ending it with a sweet left hook putting Mayorga down and out. It was a close fight by all accounts Mosley may have lost a decision. Ya wouldn't see that in Rocky;)

    Part 1 http://www.boxing-core.com/videos/_Matt_Skelton_vs_Martin_Rogan_Part_1?vid=10001244&tid=107
    Part 2 http://www.boxing-core.com/videos/_Matt_Skelton_vs_Martin_Rogan_Part_2?vid=10001223

Technically not a great fight at all but what a seesaw slug fest!!!

Hamed Barrera was a classic too for all the right reasons. Christ ,but did you ever enjoy seeing anyone take a beating as much? If only someone would do it to Floyd

I think you'll find that one was in the early/mid nineties.

Sorry in advance as my post below is all wrong as somehow i worked out decade was as far back as the early 90's and then saw the post above me but after spending so much time writing this post i will leave it up. Please delete it in the case i should have already done

These are not the best fights but in terms of fight i enjoyed most and only considering ones I've actually watched live on TV:

    Nigel Benn v McClelland
i know its terrible the shocking results on McClelland's life, but only considering the fight itself and on the night and not the aftermath, I was only bout 10 at time and Benn was my hero and it was a non stop a battle

Steve Collins v Eubank in Green Glens

Collins and his hypnotist on the LateLate was quality, Eubank brickin it cos Collins was hypnotised [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2m_pcPhWp0w] and then Collins charging

    Holyfield v Tyson & Holyfield v Lewis PPV's

Cos PPV was big deal back then , seemed much more expensive and was late night when ur small

    Lewis v Rahman

Absolutely terrible fight like most heavyweights in weird South African arena but always hated Lewis cos of the bluff he used to talk ("supercillious" champion), his boring fights and those Union Jack shorts with that Candian accent. So beautiful to see the big man fall

    Pacquiao v David Diaz

wasn't that good a fight but personally jus liked how unbelievably fast pacman was and youd almost think he had bades in his gloves cos wot he did to Diaz face

    Dunne v Cordoba
because was off my seat screaming at the telly for the whole fight and dancing round the room at the end

More than 5 but I'm not good at counting wink.gifwink.gif

I remember stumbling accross this at 5am on a Sunday morning on BBC1 and sitting through it... That big Rahman shot to send that plank to the floor nearly had me messing myself. Lewis was 1/50 to win that fight!

Yeah thats right, had the same reaction myself. The whole thing was so surreal, in strange surroundings in what was a South African gym more or less for world title fight, completely against the odds and BBC never boxing

Off the top of my head are

    Gatti v Ward I
    Corrales v Castillo I
Pacquiao v Marquez I (possibly II aswell)
    Morales v Barrera

Recently I've enjoyed Maidana v Ortis and of course Dunne Cordoba but i'm sure i've seen two better fights over the last ten years

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,696 ✭✭✭mark renton

    1. Dunne v Ortiz - where it all began
    2. Dunne v Valdez - from boy to man
    3. Dunne v Betts - the homecoming
    4. Dunne v Pickering - the first title (walshb doesnt recognise IBC and anyone that does gets a mandatory ban)
    5. Dunne v Cordoba - WBA Champion of the world

    tough restricting to 5
