Can you tax a truck privately ? its a volvo fh12 ,,it does not carry goods ever and its my own truck,,it is insured to tow trailer, which it does do, again trailer is my own and its not used for hire or reward,
i know you can tax a crew cab jeep privately,or a van,,so what about my truck?

The size of the engine would make it outrageously expensive. Nothing to stop you though.

Why? Can't of a reason to pay more road tax!

It was usually done by people who could not get vans thru the DOE so by taxing private they avoided the need for any test as the NCT is not for vans. It is a loophole in the law that was never closed.

But a Volvo FH12 is a truck not a van! I get the idea of a van but surely you would be asked for a DOE test for a truck?

Only if the taxation class was goods.

It would be an interesting conversation at the tax office.

tax would be lots cheaper private,,, tax for a private vehicle only goes up to 3001cc engine size,,and is 1566 for the year,
if i tax truck commericial its has to be weighed with a trailer, and tax comes to 3198 for the year,
    ''
An articulated vehicle (i.e. vehicle and semi-trailer) is regarded as a single vehicle and
motor tax is payable on the basis of the unladen weight of the tractor unit plus the
unladen weight of the heaviest semi-trailer which will be used at any time during the
period of the licence.'' so you think no reason why i cant tax it private, and still use my trailer for when i need to move stuff, my own stuff that is, i,m not trying to pull a fast one, truck never works! and is fully insured to tow trailer

i dont think you can insure a van as private as on the tax class its a commercial vehicle.

Oh yes you can. ;) People have been doing it for years.

i dont know about taxing a truck private, but i think to change the taxation class on any vehicle it has to have a current doe or nct which ever applies to the vehicle.
Im sure someone will correct me if im wrong.
Would be intrested to see if you can do it.

Taxing a van as private is allowed as there is a loophole that has been allowed to exist ever since the NCT was introduced.
Privately taxed vehicles do not need a DOE and the NCTS do not test vans, so nothing is needed at all. I would have thought that this loophole would have been closed by now.

does the vehicle have to have a valid test to change taxation class?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Nope. You just need to complete a form to change class and your done. You will then get a new logbook with the change noted.
