Laptop Recommendation Help - Much Appreciated

    Hows it goin!

Plenty of laptop threads already as I can see, but each person needs different specs etc so I after a bit of searching I thought I'd make my own..

Got around €800 I'd say to spend but hopefully a little bit cheaper. Need one mainly for college, for the next 2 - 3 years depending on a masters, my course is beginning to become heavily computer based with Photoshop, InDesign, and especially AutoCAD. Also using photoshop quite a bit for societies posters and designing hoodies etc etc.. I'd do the odd bit of video editting but nothing too fancy at the same time, and obviously downloading music and movies too.

Considering those CAD and photoshop programmes, I'd say processing power will be a big deciding factor. I'd want a decent hard drive but that's not a massive decider, cos i've an external 1Tb media player for movies and backup anyway. Would love to be able to play some current games on it too like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. A good screen size would be a plus too for occasional movies.

Have no idea what to be lookin for in terms of a warrantee/insurance either. And I don't know much about processors (Dual-Core? how many GHz? etc) And would getting one built to my specs be very pricey?

Also would getting one up north/england be a good idea? sterling has gotten pretty weak recently and its generally cheaper up there.

Think that's about it! Any sites or info/reccomendations you could give me would be much appreciated.

    Thanks a million anyway.

As for games, you wont be able to play COD or most recent games on a laptop under €1200-1500'ish (Rough estimate). Reason being graphics, a decent chipset will cost you an arm and a leg!

Really? that's fairly sh1te :D... Cos I'd be able to download pretty much whatever game I wanted for free.

    COD minimum system requirements are:

System: Pentium 4 2.4 GHz or faster or equivalent, RAM:512 MB, Hard Drive Space:8000 MB, Other:GeForce 6600 / Ati Radeon 9800Pro or better.

    and recommended requirements are:

System:2.4 GHz Duo Core or faster or equivalent, RAM:1024 MB, Hard Drive Space:8000 MB, Other:GeForce 7800 / Ati Radeon X1800 or better.

So you reckon that's definately out of the question?

Thanks for the reply. Keep the suggestions coming people :)

have a look at the Dell Vostro range (listed under the small business section of the site. note prices are listed without VAT, so you have to factor it in)

For Photoshop and CAD i'd normally recommend a 17'', as it's a pain in the arse to be doing them on a small screen. for €800 you can get a Vostro 1720 with a P8700 (2.53Ghz Core2Duo), 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD and a 512MB Nvidia 9600m. Pretty good specs for the price and well up for what you're doing. The only thing is those 17'' Vostro's are heavy (I know, I have an older model myself).

If portability is important though there's a 1320 for about the same price and specs, but with a much weaker graphics card (256MB 9300m). It'll still handle all your college stuff but wont be up to much for gaming.

Alternatively, if gaming is more important, you can occasionally find decent deals on Sony/Acer/Asus which might land you a better GFX card for the same price. I can't see anything though online at the mo, so i'd be inclined to stick with the 1720. It's a damn good all rounder.
