Lads, Season isn't that long away so...
I want to put a bit of condition on the dogs now so they can work it off.
One of em is a bit light. I have em wormed now but he's too light for a lot of work.

What high quality foods do you guys use??
Rather not pay 60 quid bracket but at same time I don't mind if it sorts em out.

    Cheers

I'm using Champion for working dogs. 15kg bag is about €16 + VAT in Musgraves Cash & Carry. I sometimes use Red Mills worker if I can't get to the C & C. I also throw in a tin of dog food to add a bit of "flavour"

    Here are some weight gain recipes;

    http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/health/diet4.htm

also dont used canned foods as these are better diet foods than weight gain foods. An old conditioning tip is to give a dog a small knob of margarine with its food or give the animal the water from a boiled rabbit .

I give mine feedwell its about 20 yo yos a bag i think its good stuff.Give him tripe and raw chicken wings its like giving him about 10 big macs pure protein,he will lash the weight on and keep a good condition

I was always scared of feeding my dog chicken wings in case he choked on them??

I had my lab with the vet twice and I cant put weight on him, he's skin and bone, I have tried all brand of food and not much dofference.

I feed him once a day, he's a very active dog and eats like a horse but it seems to run straight through him ( about 5/6 times a day )

Dont know what to try next, vet reckons to put him on a working dog feed from Burns food supplies $$$$$

Our Pointer was very thin before last season, initially the vet recommended Burns 'Extra' (for nursing bitches) has higher protein & oil. Used this for a while, but its very dear. Switched to Red Mills Leader 'Supreme' for the summer, which is fine, it is almost equivalent to the burns stuff in protein & oil.

Spoke to a red mills agent at the game fair, they said they do Leader 'Energy' that they recommended for working dogs. So going to switch to that on the next bag and use for the season, as it has higher % protein for when she needs it. Red mills is about €35 for 15kg bag, where as Burns was €64 for 2x 7kg bags.

Well lads after your comments & some research I have got Eukanuba(excuse the spelling) large breed puppy food. Ny on 65 quid for 15KG.

It has 29% protein, 17% oils & fats (i think) & lashes of vitamins etc.
I am mixing this with tripe I am collecting in the butchers today, eggs & the best bits & bobs from the table.

He eats like a horse but as someone mentioned it just straight through the more I give him so I want what he gets to be good.

I'll let ye know how he gets on.

I expect him to be barking with an Austrian accent by the time the season comes around! :D

If you get your food in the North, then food for working dogs is VAT free. During the season I have my working dogs on purina pro plan. Its about £45 for a 15kg bag. Thing to remember is with these foods that the quality is so good you need to feed less than you would with run of the mill stuff. If the dog has had a hard working day then I give a little extra. Added advantage is there is less to clean up after! In the off season my dogs eat Dr. John silver. £9 for 20kgs. I would add off cuts of meat from the table and add a little oil or an egg to the diet. I never feed tinned food unless Im weaning pups and even then its a small ammount. I find it makes their s**t stink to high heaven!

i bought tinned pork and ham from lidl to add to my dogs dry food. a greyhound man in work sears by it. would you reckon this is bad for them mallards? i looked at the tin and its 15% protein and 22% fat. im trying to add weight aswell as muscle on my bitch.

It's not bad for them Stevo, it's just very rich for their stomachs. If they are not used to it, a sudden change off dog food will give them an awful dose of scour! Longer term I found their dung really stinks with whatever they put in the tinned stuff and with five dogs and neighbours I can't be doing that. I know one lad who kept a collie on nothing but tripe and cooked potato skins. The dog may have caught the odd rabbit for itself too. The dog was still a working dog at 14!
