Ok lads hope someone can enlighten me on this.I bought the freesat diy jobbie ,dish ,box etc. and headed down to mayo to install it on my father in' laws house.I bought a "sat finder" and RG6 coaxial cable and headed down.I installed the dish and box then pointed the dish 28.2 degrees east and got nothing.I attached the sat finder and got a very weak signal east.I took down the dish and tried it every where on the house and the signal was crap ,that bad that it was'nt even regestering as a percentage on the freesat box.I headed back to wicklow and plugged the box into my dish at home and it was fine. The cables were fine as I used the same cable as I used to run my own freesat box off my sky dish ,any ideas:(

    #??

You musnt have been pointing in the right direction,
how did you line up the dish in the first instance?

Basically started with pointing east while attached to the house and moved it in 1/4 of an inch towards southeast and used the sat finder that way I also adjusted it the up and down direction with the numbers on the side of the adjustment bracket.I pointed it in every direction east that I could imagine.I even went to have a look around the town to see everyone elses dish to see what the crack was ,nothing unusual there?

If your sat finder can't tell you what satellite you are pointing at or looking for then you would be looking for a Needle/Nail/Ironbar in a haystack.

it's a crude finder it just gives more lights when it picks up a signal

So, the box is fine - tick. The cable is fine - tick. The dish is most likely fine unless it got bent out of shape. This only leaves a few things . . .

    1) you're pointing at the wrong sat (or out into space) - there's nothing in you post to indicate that you are definitely pointing at the right place and all the evidence points to the opposite.
    2) your LNB is damaged or not lined up correctly.
    3) the dish is too small for the location - too far west of the beams primary focus. I'm not in a position to say what size disk is required, but it's worth checking out.

While the satellite finder is the best way to pick up a signal, using an old SKY box will help to let you know what satellite the dish has found and the strength/quality of the signal. After wasting hours trying to align my dish to Astra 2, (I was getting a strong signal on the sat finder but I was pointing at the wrong satellite), I connected up an old SKY box and soon realised my mistake and then moved the dish until I found another strong signal and teh SKY box confirmed that this time I was locked onto Astra2 so then I could adjust teh dish to get the best signal strength/quality using the sat finder AND the Sky box.
