Charities at freshers week.

What do you think of the policy of allowing non affiliated charity to set up stalls during freshers week? I'm not talking about the likes of the VdeP which are under the CSC and subject to their rules but rather other organisations outside of the CSC but operated by trinity students.

Personally I don't really like be harassed by charity muggers in trinity. At least with the VdeP if you say your not interested they'll leave you alone but others I've encountered have been quiet aggressive in their approach, following students, trying to step in front of them and shouting at them.

I didn't notice any actually, bar VdP and Cancer, were they on Front Square?

I thought the bank (bank of Ireland and AIB I think) reps were really annoying - getting in your face at every entrance and whenever you when into the Arts building.

I don't see a problem with charities in general being allowed in. Freshers' Week would be a good opportunity to get a few donations. Aggressive ones though should be kicked out.

Can't say I noticed them to be honest. Which charities? And where were they set up? I've seen (and *cough* participated in) some fairly hard-hitting 'recruitment' tactics for societies and clubs, including literally picking up a friend of mine and carrying him to the Comedy Soc stand to make him join up, so I don't think societies are necessarily any better at not hassling people, and compared to letting the banks in to shill at people (though thankfully, if you're wearing a society hoodie most of them are smart enough to leave you alone) I think letting charities in for one week of the year is acceptable enough.

Didn't notice any of these charities either
But the bank people were so annoying...especially since they were virtually unavoidable-at the entrances and in the art block... Thank God they'll be gone next week :p

Well I did make a complaint and 15 minutes later the stall along with their seven or so recruiters were gone. So fair play to rob kherns I guess.

Societies don't usually insult people in an effort to get their attention and the bank shills are generally not in trinity. Though I've seen a few of them wandering around inside, tut tut. I don't think its a week for charities, its for clubs and societies and any other organisation allowed in should respect that and not abuse it.

The first one may be generally true (though I've seen other posters on this board defying that theory), but the second definitely isn't, this year in particular. There were 20-30 bank people inside the main doors of the arts block at any given time (in full view of security, so I assume they weren't prohibited from being there).

Me think money has spoken to the trinity powers, doesn't make it right.

The bank people were definitely around the arts block last year too. They had their own tables and all.

I don't see a problem with trinity getting a bit of money for letting them in during Freshers' Week. The banks benefit, the universities benefit, and most of the students benefit too from getting the free stuff from the banks

They've been there as long as I can remember, and I'm sure theres strict rules on how they're meant to interact with students.

I have no problem with charities, but I was annoyed at the SU sponsored companies; whatever about joining a bank being of benefit, nobody gains from meteor and dominos pizza reps annoying people

It happens. I once watched Joseph O'Gorman leading out a woman and her possessions from behind a CSC Property table, back when the animal rights nutters used to hang around.

ENTS has got a huge sponsorship deal from meteor apparantly.
