All you do is go to the jobcentre plus "shop" in whichever town/city you move to, with proof of ID and they will generate a NI number for you.

You will need to go to your nearest welfare office and book an appointment to apply for a NI number. Be warned that this can take a couple of weeks. Took me a few visits to the office due to their incompetance. They misbooked the meetings or the correct person wasn't there when I arrived for my appointment.

You will need proof of address also for your new UK address which also means you will need a bank statement or a utility bill. Utility bill is the easier option as getting a bank account is a whole new can of worms.

This is all based on my experiences in 1999/2000 so hopefully things are better now!! Best of luck.

I worked there last year and applied for my N.I number in August.

    Card arrived last week.

    Just so ya know! ;)

    Thanks for the advice guys,

I rang up the job center plus crew anyway, they have arranged an interview for me in a couple of weeks and the lady on the phone said it will probably be a couple of weeks before they generate a number after the interview.

heres the link below, with the phone number should anyone else have to go through this process, they asked me to bring along passport, proof of uk adress, (utility bill or simular) and some form of paperwork to show what type of jobs you have been appling for or have got.

Just recieved my N.I. number, all in all about 3 weeks waiting time for the interview, just over 2 weeks after the interview to get the number, pretty painless process to be honest
