Performance of your opponents PC is irrelevant as long as the they have set the frame rate to fixed in the options menu as opposed to variable.

That definitely isn't the case on ggpo.

I take no credit for that :P Was some other boardsie.

Yea i haven't got 1 laggy game with it aside from games with E ranked comps and people with red signals. When it's fixed i believe the offending comp has terrible lag and the one that works fine well...works fine :P

Just picked up copies of AE on amazon for 22 pounds, ps3 and Xbox, to ease the difficulty of tournaments.

Box art looks lurvely, kinda looking forward to getting them.

Disc copy is definitely handy, and I'm going to pass off my copy of Super to my nephews and tell them for €12 they can upgrade themselves to AE (from Vanilla).

It's a shame there aren't more complete disc releases, always having to have the update DLC and unlocks makes MOST of the games we play terribly awkward.

Yeah, Neatherrealm talk a big talk about making MK tournament friendly, but they've shown a failing all the way along when it's actually needed (xbox unpatched when offline, dlc chars, useless button check, poor training mode too from what I hear).

As for arksys/zen... well... their contempt/ lack of understanding for the needs of their (western) players is pretty obvious :D

You're just saying that because you couldn't get any of their t-shirts before they sold out.

Training mode is pure crap in MK. Good for combo practise but little else.

However I don't see the issue with not having a game patched if your xbox is offline. I thought that was the only way of patching games via Xbox. Is there some other way? If thats the case then its not the fault of the game designers.

As for DLC characters, I'm pretty there is free compatability packs that allow you to play against the DLC characters even if you don't own the DLC. So thats fine in my opinion.

I've heard that Netherealms have been pretty swift to squash bugs too (i.e Sindels infinite, Sub Zero freeze glitch).

In order to get around the MS licensing fee, the developers have opted for server based content you connect to instead of proper DLC, so it's not available at all once you take your console offline.

The xbox needs to be connected to the net while playing to use the latest update. It doesnt use the normal title upates

Standard DLC on the 360 works like this:
It will work online and offline on the first console you downloaded the DLC to. You can change the console all your DLC is assigned to once a year.
The DLC is also available if you move your Gamertag to another console, but only while you're connected to Xbox LIVE.

As Kiki Chopper said, in order to get around the fee MS charges for every piece of DLC or patch available through XBL, Mortal Kombat streams patches to your game whenever you're online. When you disconnect, those patches cannot be accessed.
As far as I recall they're doing a downloadable patch that has all the current changes soon enough.

Was unaware of that. Cheers for that. Suppose if a title update is coming its not to bad.

The DLC itself works offline though (new characters and costumes). Its only the balance changes and bug fixes that don't work then.

Suppose if they intended to do regular updates of the game it could get quite costly. By using this stream process it seems to be a good compromise. Do many quick fixes, react to bugs and balance requests and then combine them into a big patch every so often.

Question on Alt costumes, why arent the vanilla alts available in AE for those who purchased them in vanilla? Not sure how it is on the consoles, but they arent there on PC for me. Surely they don't expect us to buy them twice?

  • Moderators Posts: 5,598 ✭✭✭Azza

There is some compatability issue. Vanilla alt costumes don't work.

The DLC will be much cheaper this time around on PC. €15.00 for every alt costume. Think its to be released next week.

When the whole game cost me €20 it makes the dlc look very expensive.

Say that to the people who payed 300ms per costume pack for like 25 costume packs lol.

Yeah the problem is though that DLC that has game changing effects such as new characters that aren't free are, quite frankly, a pain in the arse when you're trying to run a tournament. At least in Vanilla we could play through the game a couple of times to unlock the characters.

That's why it was nice of capcom to release a nice, cheap AE disc, I mean they got all the DLC buys they were going to get from releasing that a few weeks earlier. I really don't think the disc release is for anyone but tournament players.

    Aye agreed.

The convenience is definitely worth the price difference for me (€18?) i.e. as long as I keep the disc in my backpack, I can always drop by for casuals after work without messing around with save data, profiles and USB sticks.

That is the Evo monitor and although the price looks cheap and they say Free Shipping, they likely either don't ship to Ireland or not for free and there'd be import duty on it too.

Would this be a viable option for Cork casuals we need to do something about this. We need somewhere central and it's unfair to expect Sai to be running casuals in his house on a regular basis.

On an unrelated note is there a way to test for input lag on a T.V. or something to look out for in the specs that would be a tell tale sign.

There's nothing in the specs to help with it.

There is two main test methods that I am aware of.

    1) The Rockband test. Using a rythm game like Rockband it is possible to test for input lag. On the older games it is a test that you perform and thus may not be totally accurate but should be okay for an indicator if you do a fairly large sample size. The Rockband 2 guitars (and I presume 3 as well) came with an auto sensor that would do it automatically. This is better but from what I've read is still not completely 100%.

    2) The CRT method. This involves hooking up your monitor/TV and a CRT (or any display that you know to be lag free) to a PC and duplicating the display. You then display a stopwatch that shows down to ms. Let it run and take pictures periodically with a highspeed camera and compare the two results. Again you would want to do a fairly large sample size to try ensure accuracy. Not 100% again but definitely the preferred method if you have the equipment.

A lot of tvs and monitors have been tested and have the results posted online. However trying to find a particular model or to get enough evidence to feel confident about the results, is a long and arduous process.

That Asus monitor is not the one used at Evo.

This is the monitor used at Evo.

Think the ASUS was used in 2009 and they started using the Alienware monitors last year.

I may or may not have completely forgotten to do that.
I called in earlier to the two gaming cafes I know of and asked about bringing consoles in. They both said they would ask their managers and would email me back about it.
