My sister says it's wrong to have meat with potatoes, that they counteract each other or something like that. I can't quite get my head around it. I thought a potato was a vegetable and that having meat and two veg was good for you? Is my sister correct please?

If you are doing portion counting, then your potato is counted as a starchy carb, not a vegetable. Things like broccoli and cauliflower and spinach are vegetables.

If you are doing a low carb diet, then potatoes are limited. But if you eat them, you are encouraged to eat them with a protein like meat. The idea that your tummy can't digest two types of food at once is nonsense.

In general, FATS and carbs are not a good combination. The carbs will spike insulin, which will enable your body to store the fat very efficiently. So potatoes and meat are a much better combination than potatoes and butter.

Ah, just wrote about something like that in another thread .. OP, your sis is probably right - having potato with lean meat is ok but some carvery type dinners are disaster as they have loads of high gi carbs (portatoes) along with lots of fat ..

I think what your sister meant is that there is a theory that meat requires acidic enzymes to be digested and carbohydrates require alkaline enzymes to be digested and if you eat them both at the same time they counteract each other and don't break down properly. This is complete quackery, the sulphuric acid in your stomach is nearly always the same Ph and all food passes through the stomach before reaching the intestinal tract.

Eat what you want, within limits, as long as you watch your portions.

Yes portions are now what have me in a muddle! I read in another post that its best to have a lot of small meals. For lunch I had a good few leaves of lettuce, 2 boiled eggs, some cucumber, 1 tomato, half an apple and 2 slices of wholemeal bread...it's all good but is it too much? I know lettuce is 0 points so does that mean you can have as much as you want and the more the better or should you keep to small portions throughout the day? Thanks again for all your help guys..

Did you go to your first meeting yet or are you still guessing by yourself?

Went to a meeting on Tuesday and to be honest I was a little disappointed....I thought there would be more of a 1 to 1. There were about 30 ladies there and one man.....me!
