Returning an engagement ring

Probably a bit of a stupid question but here goes. I'm going to propose to my girlfriend in the next few weeks so am obviously looking into the whole subject of rings. From reading the threads on here it seems the majority think that it's a better idea to buy the ring as a couple than for the fella to buy it beforehand. TBH I'd probably prefer to let my girlfriend pick it out aswell but I've dropped a few subtle (I hope) hints and I honestly think she'd prefer if I had it when I proposed.

My question is whether we could return the ring if she didn't like it or would the jeweller tell us to get lost?

Any decent jeweller will let you exchange the ring. I'd doubt if they'd refund you though if you returned it and wanted to go to another jeweller. Ask the places directly for their policies.
