I'm not sure if this is a topic that is raised much. What are peoples different methods of getting good carbs and protein throughout the day When they don't have they option of heading home.
Im realising during the middle of the day my diet is crappy.

So basically I know it would vary but what would you eat throughout the middle of the day?

I've started snacking on these Beef Jerkies over the last 2 weeks and find them great. Packed with protein, low in cards, and taste good. I didn't buy too many as I wanted to try them, but I'm going to buy in bulk next week, as I can see myself using them for quite a while. Work out a nice bit cheaper when bought in bulk too.

Also snack on a handful of almonds, and love peanut butter on ricecakes. Also very nutritious is cottage cheese on ryvitas.

Bring some hard boiled eggs with you in a air tight container for respect of the people around you obviously.

Or cold chicken fillets cooked from the night before ?

Smoked Salmon on some brown bread with lemon juice ?

Beef jerky is gorgeous - otherwise known as Billtong in South Africa, both really good and healthy. Buy online for it though.

Here are some things I do:
    • Boil 6 eggs the night before. Have 3 after gym and 3 at 10am in work.
    • Make a tuna lunchbox the night before with sweetcorn/carrots/broccoli/tomato/lettuce, etc
    • Bring a bag of almonds to work. It can last you the week if you ration them out.
    • When no one is looking sneak over to the coffee corner and get a cup of milk from the dispenser which is supposed to be used for just topping up tea or coffee. Repeat 3 or 4 times :pac:

    The only limit is lazyness.

Tub of "american style" peanut butter and possibly some whole grain bread, with disposable knife/spoon to apply. Good fats, low salt, lot of protein. Bread gives you your carbs. At least in the States beef jerky is salty as hell and dehydrates you. Then again I eat the most anti-sodium diet a human cause my body hates it :D

Edit: Also milk has estrogen etc and IMHO = bad for athletes and people looking to keep the fat off while they gain

See my link in post #3. I'd definitely recommend them. I'm munching on a pack of original flavour right now! Mmm.

I also vote for beef jerky.
Plus a shake of whey and fine ground oats + flavouring is consumable anywhere.

Chicken - quality from a butcher - is at all time low at €2 for a large breast. cook and take with you.

frozen salmon from lidl - cook in advance.
smoked mackerel from tesco - incredible cheap - needs a microwave though.
quality ham joint from aldi. a fiver.
trout - cooked - from lidl - gorgeous. cheap. fantastic.

18 battery farmed eggs from aldi =€2.

Food seems to be getting cheaper.
Its never been easier to get protein.

defo tuna, or prawns .. milk is over rated IMO, a tin of tuna in spring water packs 30g of protein, you would have to drink a lot of milk to get that ...

Wow that's a lotta eggs!!! Do you know anything about whether that would be ok for someone with high cholesterol? I know the age-old debate...

It's just that I LOVE eggs and I don't really like red meat and the like, so eggs would be a preferrable source of protein to me... But I was told to only have 2/3 a week... then I was told one a day is OK... which is it??? A boiled egg/two would be a dead handy way to get some extra protein into the ould lunchbox... I don't suppose anyone has a definitive answer on this?

P.S. I do already have things like poultry and fish to get protein from, would just like to mix it up a bit though!

If only it were that easy... I wish I worked somewhere with such simple pleasures as a water cooler/kettle/fridge or a microwave to make some porridge... Boo hoo :(

Instead we have several restaurants on campus but we are not allowed bring in our own food! Their food - not so healthy... And very pricey!!!

    Check this thread out.

You don't to have 6 at a time. I just find it handy to boil 6 at a time. Leave the extra ones in the fridge for a couple of days & they'll be fine.

food is getting cheaper because supermarkets are screwing irish farmers and suppliers out of a fair price for their goods.

a lot of this cheaper food have "packaged in Ireland" stickers on them but who knows where they originally came from.

I buy fruit and veg in Aldi and thats it, local butchers all the way

milk is not over rated, its not fashionable, its not a new breakthru product or fancy supplement. Its a simple liquid food that makes mammals grow, its sold everywhere. Its amino acid profile is perfect and its concentration in liquid form is optimum. tuna is cheap, very easy to digest and is virtually fat free, but milk is a much better source of protein for growth.

    yes, I love milk.

It goes well served with heavy squats too

i love milk too, but, technically its for calves, not humans.
that and the fact that we lose the ability to produce the enzyme to fully digest milk at about age 2

Reply to the last two posts:

There's also a lot of hormones in dairy products in general that will cause an increase in body fat, water retention, and metabolic interference. Just like alcohol and caffeinated drinks, I try to stay away from all that as much as possible because there's no reason to inhibit the fact you've worked so hard in the gym.
