The ultimate sleeper

I've just spotted this on carzone recently and was fooled by it for a minute: http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/S60/2.4-T-LE/200938195258627/advert?channel=CARS

After checking it out on mywheels it appears that it is a T5. The first owner obviously specified it with the intention of it being a sleeper, as it is de-badged and is in quite a subtle colour too.

Is it possible I wonder to get a car any more subtle that has 260bhp and tops out at 150mph+?

Sleeper?I nearly fell asleep looking at it anyway ...I can only imagine the shock on the boy racers faces...Mad!I wonder does it handle though?

    ...pity it's manual.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I'd say handling is more safe than entertaining.

And pity it's not her sisteR :D

The T is just about fast enough to upset a hot hatch, but ultimate sleeper and FWD don't really go together, do they?

I'd agree. I had one pull up beside me on the motorway last week. Same as the one linked above but it was a '06 model. I was in cruise control at 130kmph the some young lad pulled level with me and beeped the horn and gestured for a race.
I smiled and let him at it. He took off and my feet never even touched the pedals
They are definitely quick, but i know my own car won't set the world on fire when already cruising at that type of speed. It must have been the fathers car cos its an old mans car as well as a sleeper :D

In the T5's defense, it is not an out and out performance car like an M3 or Audi S4 and isn't meant to look like one. Think of it as more of a rival to a top of the line 3 Series than anything else.

I've been in one before by the way and they are bloody quick!

The perfomance of the R over the T isn't that great when you add everything up,the R has around 35bhp more and weighs over 200kgs more so only hits 60 slightly quicker,it does have 4wd though

That's it really, although it does have the 4C chassis as standard and looks slightly more distinctive. The engine is basically the same with a bigger turbo and intercooler, producing 300bhp.

A RWD in the wet is more likely to do that to you to be fair.

yeah a 2wd with 260 ponies is more than likely just going to torque steer into the gate post as you drive out of the house :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭BArra

why would any sane individual put the foot down in anything with that kinda engine when they have the steering wheel turned, its just asking to be wrapped around a ditch....

a car that does 0-60 in over 7 seconds is harldy a sleeper is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,594 ✭✭✭tossy

Torque steer happens when going in a straight line.

Thats the million dollar question Colm, what is fast? and what the ratio of fast v's appearance to make a car a sleeper.

I was in a 3 mps at the weekend and I have to say from the outside you are not expecting it to be as blistering as it is.

The one I was a passenger in just needed a better driver tbh

Bit like when you get eaten by a TDI that's been rebadged to look like a TDI

    We've all been there.

Ooohh a type 85 Audi, nice!

    Most likely a 90 with a 10/20v 5 turbo dropped in,
very popular engine around Scandinavia, big power
    if tuned properly.

Great car those, like a UR quattro without
having to loosen your belt to buy one (damn that Ashes To Ashes!)

I don't get the sleeper idea, it doesn't appeal to me. Powerful cars should look the part!

I prefer the sleeper look compared to the sheep in wolves clothing strategy!

Have you driven a FWD car with 260 bhp and a Limited Slip Differential? torque steer is only noticable when accelerating hard with the wheels turned, accelerating hard over very uneven surfaces!

I've been driving a T5 now for 18 months and to be fair to the car it isn't ment to be an out and out sports saloon. It is an everyday car which sits in traffic and is all but invisible. I agonised over de-badging it when I first got it, but you know what? Most people have no idea what a T5 is. I park mine all over the place and don't give it a second thought. I like that about it, I don't need to worry about her, alone on the street being mugged or worse.

0-60 is 6.5 on paper, but that doesn't really tell the whole story. 2nd gear will get you into trouble and 3rd will loose you your licence. You can be the wrong side of 100mph in no time if you are in 3rd at 50mph.

I've grown accustomed to having 265bhp on call at all times and I have yet to find any occasion when I needed more. Now obviously I've not driven Porches or the like but a hotted up turbo diesel the T5 ain't. I have yet to be phased by a GTi or any other hot hatch. Not that I go looking for trouble though.

So to sum up, it ain't flash, looks pretty much like any other S60, can give a good account of itself, has a Tonganese half brother with a gimpy leg and can transport a family about in comfort and pass the cop test with ease.

Again Rick i was joking, and maximum respect to the RX7 great car.I have driven powerful FWD cars with a decent LSD and it makes some difference.

Personally i love the sleeper look.

Great sleeper.. Well, not right now but as stock.

Who expects to be taught a lesson by a clio? :p

135i BMW. 3-litre twin turbo. 300bhp. RWD. In a small 4-door hatchback. (I think you can get it with this body style) Then add 116i badges for the added effect.

    This is my dream car.

Light... ish. Quick. Comfy. Anonymous as hell, because how many 1-series do you see that are just plane old 1.6-2 litre models?

A customer of mine bought an A6 4.2 quattro tip. The first thing he did was switch around the badge on the back so it says 2.4!

It doesn't have the S6 alloys or any of that stuff, so in traffic it looks pretty normal, but you should hear the noise out of it when you put the foot down... savage! :D:D

Think your missing the point about sleepers! anybody who knows anything about cars knows that M5's, S8's are fast as f**k! a sleeper is something that doesnt look fast but is! I dont think M5's etc look slow!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,620 ✭✭✭Graham_B18C

I've never been a fan of the whole sleeper thing, I am also one to think that powerful cars should look good.

I do like the MPS and I know they can move...very quickly. And I can also see why people are a fan of sleepers.

But Tossy, i'd hardly call your car a sleeper...it's a very mean looking machine! And the 'ring sticker on the back is a bit of a givaway!!!

It's just I find all those cars you like a bit ostentatious. There are a lot of great cars out there that you haven't driven probably because you haven't noticed them for a second.

Well i've driven almost everything at this stage, some I remember well and some don't even register as they we're nothing special really.
