Apparently John O'Shea said some bad things about Kerry football last year, that didn't go down well in the County Board.

Also, vital round of County Championship this weekend.

No excuse. Was a great night out for all and a great fundraiser, but its a pity we couldn't have set up a Match for a different Charity.
I really dislike John O'Shea it has to be said, he passes himself off as an expert but knows nothing and ends up embarrassing himself and Kerry in the process. But this is no excuse to cancell such a great event.

bad form that a charity suffers because of personalities!

i suggest people actually read the article and also follow up their facts. this game was NEVER happening, this was decided BEFORE the final. Their was no guarantee they would win it on sunday so they made the decision on the basis of previous experiece and the fact that there are many important club games happening this weekend.

That's beside the point. GOAL ask the competing counties before the final if they will play the match if they win as it is played on the Wednesday after the final and there would not be time to organise it at such short notice after the final.
Cork said they would play it, Kerry said they wouldn't. "Important club games" is no excuse, every county that plays in the AI final has important club games to play and they nearly all play the GOAL challenge.
In fact this is the first time I can remember any AI-winning team refusing to play it.
It's not actually a serious game anyway, most of it is just larking about and the players don't have to exert themselves too much.
As I heard someone else say: "Kerry:a team to admire but not to like!".
    Too true.

Charity begins at home, why should the Kerry team or anyone else give €30k to be sent out to Africa where it will most likely be misappropriated or squandered. John O'Shea is a tool and I never liked him, they think they have some god given right to the after match game, I would rather have the money raised be put into something like club facilities or under age development not spent on feeding children on an overpopulated continent that gives nothing to the world only problems.

Banned, no need to abuse John O'Shea.

This thread could quite easily get out of hand, but I am leaving it open for now.

Anyway back on topic, I am disappoined that Kerry have decided not to play this game. I can understand the reasoning in a way though, these amateur players do not want to risk injury for what is essentially an exhibition, especially after a long season. However, IMO some things are more important

Ach, this game is a tradition. Shame it is ruined.

Yes, we could argue the politics of aid etc. etc. but this seems to be more down to pettiness.

It's their decision to be honest, they shouldn't be looked down upon because they didn't want to do it.

The clubs in Kerry who sold tickets (approx 11,000) added €10 to each ticket for the players fund (ie fans paid €80 for a €70 ticket). This is a lot of money (110,000). If Kerry refuse to play the Goal match, they should at least make a sizable donation from this fund to the charity (or some charity). IMO.

I'd like to point out that this was not a Team decision.
Fixtures are added ONLY at County Board Level.

Just clarification for people who are dissappointed at "the Kerry Team!". Not their decision.
Of Course this doesn't justify not playing the match, but when has a County Board ever made a decision that made sense to everyone?

Very good point and who among us here has never been baffeled and let down by a county board decision

We in Cork get on very well with our County Board. There is never any "baffelment" here!

in all fairness, the kerry county board is genearlly one of the best about. the players never have much grounds for complaints. Sean Walsh, Sean kelly as the last 2 chairmen, enough said really

On the surface this seems like a very poor decision by Kerry County Board but then again we dont know the reasoning behind it.
I certainly hope that starving children are not suffering as a result of pitiness or differences of opinion.

While the article doesn't give Kerry's side of it. County boards rarely take the team's view of things before making decisions do they?

Christ ... a bit too melo-dramatic, whether this game went ahead or not wasnt going to make a bit of difference to the poor unfortunates in the third world. The amount of money raised in these types of games, by the time it is filtered thru all the charities and government agencies, the 'poor starving children' will be lucky to see a few grains of corn.
Only governments and not football teams will stop children from starving to death.

So leave off the Kerry team or county board for their decision, twas only a game.

Still bad PR for Kerry. Although with people like Galvin, Diver O' Mahony and Tadgh "Elbow Man" Kennelly playing for them they are obviously not too worried about PR.

Yeah the FOTY elect, a man who won MOM in two all ireland finals and a guy who has won the highest prize in two different sports what a PR nightmare  Off with you and polish that chip on your shoulder like a good lad ;)

Yes, because governments would never squander money.
However insignificant and watered down the contribution would become, the point being argued here is why cause the bad press and have people whinging about it? If there is a genuine reason for not playing the game, then let it be known and people may lay off a bit.
