I heard a disturbing rumour today.
Does anyone know if the new motor tax rates based on co2 emissions that came in in January are going to revert to the old rate after 3 yrs. Has anyone else heard this? could not possibly be true surely??

If there is to be a change, it will be announced in the Budget, if it is to change in 2/3 years, it would not be announced for a year or two...

Thats bull. What we are sure to see though in the near future is an adjustment in the bands. As we have seen, many mainstream cars such as your typical 1.9tdi etc have seen their tax rates reduced from almost 600/annum to only 156/annum. This was not intended and has happened because the manufacturers very quickly came out with very low co2 figures. The adjustment will surely double the current cost for some cars by simply tweaking the bands.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yes. Manufacturers tuned their engines to make them more efficient CO2 wise, just because Ireland introduced CO2 based motor tax. That really happened.

There is an element of truth to that as lots of countries have switched or are switching to a CO2 based system.
