For those that use Google sync for calendar and contacts sync, this now supports Gmail push. So I can get my mail up to 15 mins faster now... I can die happy...:pac:

I read this earlier as well.

    Didn't they already have this?

Or was it just the Google Apps users or what?

I cannot for the life of me set this up. I follow the instructions here to the letter but my iphone keeps telling me that the connecting to the exchange server failed.

i had it set up already for calendar so i just had to switch on the mail bit. US forums are reporting some difficulties so may be linked to capacity/server issues rather than something you are doing wrong

    Awesome \o/

Does push work when you're on wifi? Or only on the cellular data network?

    worked perfectly here on wifi.

took about 5 seconds to push through.

i'm gonna have to turn it off though as i'm payg price plan and i can't afford to use data all the time.

anyone know can we use this information to make gmail act as an exchange account in apple mail?

Have been using Calendar and Contacts push sync on my iPhone with a Vodafone prepay SIM and the ISP APN for weeks now. The amount of data transferred is so small that my top up balance hasn't changed at all in days (if I haven't made a call of course).

Ahhh so this is why I was getting my mail sent to 2 different places. I sync google calender. But all of a sudden it was getting my mail sent there. I also had my gmail set up separately.

I've actually stopped using push for the moment. Although mails were delivered sharpish, they take ages to download- spinning wheel. Imap loads mails much faster. Maybe it's just all the iPhone users syncing their accounts at the same time.

Same here - wonder if it'll improve over the next few weeks?

Never mind - I'll survive on IMAP and Google contacts and calendar sync are a jeebus send!

Google have said they're having load issues, but mine seems to be ok now (Cal, Contacts + Email). I was getting connection errors galore for the last few days.

I was trying to set up GMAIL as push, but I already have my office exchange set up and it says that only one Exchange account allowed .. anyway around this .. it's not that important but would be handy!

I set it up a few days ago but it didn't seem to be working I was trying to get it going today after reading this thread and it turns out I hadn't activated one of the push features on the phone in the sub menu

Settings>mail, contacts, calendars>fetch new data, obviously turn push on here but if you scroll the screen down a tiny bit you'll see one more here called advanced, in here set this to push, as soon as I did that all the mails came flooding in.

I want to go back on my original post on this thread. Push notifications will only use wifi when it's connected to wifi.

When the iPhone goes to sleep mode the wifi connection is broken and the phone uses 3G or edge for its data. So the only way to ensure that wifi is always used is to never make your iPhone go to sleep mode which is just impractical.

Sorry if I caused anyone any data charges.

Well there was extended downtime yesterday for a few hours, you may not have realised it was down as the mails were coming in to your gmail inbox on the pc but weren't being pushed to the phone for a few hours until the problems were sorted, they had an apology on the top of the gmail web page that they couldn't access your contacts and normal service would resume asap.

I think my current timezone may have worked in my favour there :)

Has anyone noticed the decreased battery life when using PUSH? My iPhone battery is wiped out in half the time since using Push. May switch back to IMAP mail.

Your login must be @googlemail and not gMail. Then it works.
