I need some assistance please. If a person is claiming job seekers allowance and rent allowance, and comes in to some money, is his allowances effected. Or is there a limit a person can have before his allowances are effected. Thanks again to all.

Is it an inheritance or win fall? In both of these cases you are entitled to it and will not be affected.
I received 10 thousand euro through and accident and claiming both at the time and was not penalised.

    Congratulations and enjoy

Thank you caseyann, what if it was substantially more. Did you report your monies?

I am sure in the Irish law you are entitled to one windfall or inheritance without any penalties towards your income originating from social services.
    Yes mine was reported.
Your best bet is to ring citizen advice and they can advise you more on how to deal with it.But as it is not an income and what they call a gift i see no reason why they should be allowed to touch it.Its not like you could live off it for rest of your life.

BTW i love to hear things like that a Huge congratulations to you and spend it with fun but keep wise. :)

I disagree with the advice given

For JA means-test purposes the first €20,000 will not affect your allowance, the next €10,000 €1 per €1,000 will be deducted from your weekly payment, the next €10,000 €2 per €1,000, the remainder €4 per €1,000

From Rent Supplement, the respective figures are:
    First €5,000 Nil, Next €10,000 €1 per €1,000, Next €25,000 €2 per €1,000, any capital over €40,000 €4 per €1,000.

All this information is publicy available on this forum in the sticky entitled 'Useful links' which I really wish more people would use...

If you are in receipt of money, you should let your office know. If it ever came to light in a review or whatever, you could potentially have a large overpayment assessed against you. You are obliged to inform the department of any change in circumstances whilst claiming.

Any discussion of hiding this or not reporting is fraud and will not be tolerated on this forum.
