Phone Line Requirement

On an excursion elsewhere BK reminded me that the only thing keeping eircom alive is Sky with their phone line requirements and the 22% of phone lines that the taxpayer pays for , mainly pensioners lines .

I need to do some math on Sky .

Which classes of subscribers require a phone line according to SKY T&Cs
    • Basic Sky?
    • Basic Sky and Sky+
    • Sky HD
    • Sky HD+
    • Any of the above with multiroom
    • Any of the above with sport
    • Any of the above with movies
And would someone please guesstimate how many of Skys subscribers out of the half million odd in the state are required to have a phone line as a consequence ??

    TIA

    SB

Multibox is the only requirement. You can pay a non-standard installation fee (€35, I think) to avail of most new customer special offers (like free installation, free box, free movies for 3 months, whatever) without the requirement of a phone line.

E.g. you can get Sky HD+ with Movies and/or Sports without a phone line.

No idea on the number of Multiroom subscribers.

You dont actually need a landline in order to get multiroom. You simply need a landline in order to avail of a cheaper second card i.e. €15. Without the landline you pay full price for the second card i.e. anywhere between €21.50 - €71.50 a month each box.

Indications are adrift that there will be no requirement into the future for phonelines....sky are currently working on wifi enabled smartcards already in exsistance which will do away with landlines and will also do away with the boxes perhaps being used in holiday homes etc....???

How about skyinyourapartment subscribers ? The singular "box" surely does not apply to multiroom ??

    http://www.skyinyourapartment.ie/terms.aspx
General: Pre-registration required for existing customers due to exceptional demand. Once registered you will receive an indication of when you can complete your order. Your Sky box(es) must be connected to a fixed telephone line for 12 months. Minimum Sky digital/Sky+/HD Pack and Multiroom subscriptions 12 months. You must be 18 years or over. Prices, channels/programmes subject to change. Further terms apply. Information only applies to residential customers in ROI.

Where one box is used you do not need a landline but you are required to pay an extra fee called a manual enablement currently runs at €37.50 in order to activate the card.

Where more than 1 box is used at the same address a landline is used to provide a second card at a reduced rate of €15...if no landline is present than second card is at full price.

In appartments every flat is classed as a different household and so each would pay their own individual subscription and once again a landline would not be required.

Well a friend of mine is in a sky in your apartment development, with only one box and he got letters from Sky threatening to take money out of his account via direct debit if he didn't connect it to a land line. So I'm not sure if the entire situation is sorted yet.

You should tell your friend to ring sky as he should not be receiving any such letter, every appartment is a different address and this is the same as with any other service provider such as UPC. The only reason he should be receiving any letter is if he has multiroom, and if he has only a single box he would have been given the option at the beginning of his contract to connect to a landline or noto by paying a manual enablement once of €37.50 and he would never have to connect it to a landline. Also after 12 months a single box can be removed from a telephone line...

Great news there steveon, I'm one of the many people stuck with my Eircon landline just for SKY multiroom. Any idea when this new technology will become available...6 months, 1 year, 5 years in the future:confused: I've heard a lot of people talk about this type of solution 'coming' but no one seems to know when:(

Geezer had BB installed and was not getting full speed. Unplugs Sky box and gets full speed.

The technology to do this already exists and is used throughtout europe with card sharing systems...there hasnt been an official announcment of sky taking it on board but I WOULD imagine that any company would rather get more buiness going forward instead of closing the doors...I loose so much buiness because of this phoneline crap its not even funny...

You and me both Steveon. There is a HD box on the way which will allow Multi-room without landline, but only God alone knows when this will be as Sky are just drip feeding info on this to ASAs at the moment.
