Getting 3G working on Vodafone

    Hello,

    I have an iPhone 3GS that I have unlocked and its working fine. The only fly in the ointment is that when I turn on 3G and load Safari it seems to use 3G for a while then switches back to 2G or something else.

    I suspect some of my settings may be incorrect but I think I've entered the correct details with regards the username and password, but I could easily be wrong.

    I'm on Vodafone so if anyone else has a 3GS on Vodafone, can you tell me what settings are required to get 3G working?

    Thanks.

    Which data bundle do you have? If you have the 1GB "ISP promo" one (which is best suited to the iPhone iMO), then the settings are:

    APN: isp.vodafone.ie
    Username: vodafone
    Password: vodafone

    The fact that you get 3G sometimes though would indicate that none of your settings are incorrect. It could be that there's patchy coverage where you are. I also think that if a lot of users are on the same mast that you're on, after a certain limit is reached, the network bumps other users to Edge/GPRS, etc instead...

    I actually don't have a data bundle or add-on. I'm on Pay as you go and I was looking last week but I couldn't see any sort of data add-on for people who are on pay as you go.

    Do they have one for Pre-pay people on Vodafone or is it only for those on contract?

    From what I can tell on their homepage, they have no bundles available to pre-pay customers:
    If you're a Prepay customer

    You pay daily as you use the service. You are only charged on days that you use the service. That's 99c for the 50MB daily allowance and 2c per KB thereafter.

    When I signed up for Vodafone's data, the "ISP" APN was a promo thing and they still had the "Live!" APN going but from the page above, it seems everything is now on the "ISP" APN so the settings above should be the ones to use on pre-pay as well (but I'm open to correction on that one, as I'm on billpay). In that case, your problems still are not likely due to the settings used...

    Do you use

    apn = live.vodafone.com
    username = dublin
    password= dublin
    ?
    I have a 2G unlocked pay as you go and thats what I use. Not sure what its like on 3G?

    The settings you already seem to have (APN=isp.vodafone.ie, user=vodafone, pass=vodafone). If your data connection is working on 2G, then that confirms you have the right settings.

    The fact that your iPhone switches back to 2G is due to coverage issues, i.e. the 3G signal is too low and the phone switches back to 2G. Take your phone as it is right now, drive close to a location that has excellent 3G coverage (f.e. next to a 3G mast) and try again: you will see that 3G will work.

    Only problem with using these settings is that it costs alot more than using the live settings on ready to go. Ideally you would want to use the Live APN.

    Depends on your usage. If you are a heavy user (Youtube, radio, etc.), then the Live APN might be cheaper. If you just browse the internet then the ISP APN is actually a lot cheaper then Live.
