The days of getting onto a ship as a deckhand, cleaner, helper, etc are gone. You have to be qualified for insurance reasons and there is a body that overseas all that. The ships won't risk it. There are websites that accept paying passengers but you will pay probably 3 times the price of a flight and will take possibly weeks as unscheduled stops are the norm. I was with 2 Canadians looking to go from Buenos Aires by ship and they exhausted everything for weeks by turning up at docks, asking around and the internet. They ended up getting a cheap enough flight with Air Malaysia.
