Anyone know of any ex-Mercedes mechanics around Dublin who would have experience of actually working of some 190E's. I had a '92 one which I sold recently but replaced it with an immaculate 1984 model. Its in such good condition that I'd like to make sure whoever fixes the inevitable niggles on a 25 year old car knows what they're doing, rather than learning on mine by trial and error!

There are two excellent people I would recommend.

http://www.lichtenberg-classics.ie/ do all the high end restorations etc.

Also there is a Mercedes Classic expert next to Lambe & O'Connor in East Wall/North Strand area. Always see 80's Mercs there.

Hi Mercmad, have an annoying rough idle on a mint condition 1984 190E 2.0l petrol auto I'd like to sort out, idle speed is 500rpm and should be 700-800. I've been pointed in the direction of the auxiliary air adjustment screw to increase the idle speed but this may just remove a symptom of the actual problem - that said it may also be THE actual problem. Could also be the idle air control valve needs cleaning or replacing. The air flap just under the air filter has also been mentioned! So, the general consensus is that "air" is involved :)

Car drives fine but the low idle is annoying, never quite stalls but often seems like it will. Needs to pass the NCT soon.

Lauder/3nero - had forgotten about Benjamin Lictenberg, he's a really helpful chap, same place as Prestige Classic Cars, not too far away either. Any idea of the name of the place beside Lambe and O'Connor?

    Seamus Mulligan Off SCR - 478 2147
A bit mad, but knows his stuff - Quite expensive, but knows his stuff - nice fellow, talks a lot.
    Ned Kelly in Kilkenny - 056 4442173
I haven't used him but a pal has and he did a good job for a reasonable price.

As far as I'm aware the guy down near Lambe and O'Connor is a law unto himself, opening hours seem erratic, I know this from trying to drop into him on numerous occasions, and I've been told that he's a little hard to deal with.

Regarding your view on most of these self appointed specialists I would agree 100%, however I may not have been clear enough on the two recommendations that I have given - They are good guys, based on experience mine, and a close friend. I wouldn't give a number if I didn't know/trust the work.

Seamus Mulligan trained in Stuttgart in the 60's, and went back for other courses - I would definitely regard him as an expert - he's just not everybody's cup of tea. I could sit and talk ****e with him for hours, my wife just wants to get out.

Ned Kelly seems to be a very good honest mechanic with a preference for Mercs, I've never met him - but have had very pleasant conversations with him on the phone.

I dont think he is too bothered with it all anymore. He is into other things and I know there has been some conflict with his landlord over the use of the place for years !
