Went down to the car this morning to go to work, lock and handle smashed on the driver side, but they didnt get the door open. Was parked on the main street of Clongriffen, right outside the off licence, which doesn't look to have camera's outside. what do i do? is there any point in ringing the guards?

do you intend on claiming on your insurance for the damage?

Ring them and report it for sure. You never know, there may have been a few break-in's and they might know who did it or have a good idea

i'm not sure if i'm going to claim, going to see how much it costs to get fixed first i suppose. i'm trying to sell the car at the minute, and it has for sale signs on it. Better give the guards a ring and report it.

    What model car is it?

From personal experience if getting a garage to do it, it can be very expensive, and you'll end up with a different lock in the drivers door, and potentially a different key for it. One key to open the door and another to start is very messy.

OTOH, if you're prepared to do it yourself using 2nd hand parts, with a bit of fiddling with the lock barrel you can end with just one key, for a total cost of maybe 20 quid.

it's a 98 Honda civic coupe, just off the phone to the guards, they said i have to call over to them , or they will have to send out someone in order to fill a report or whatever. bit of a problem as i opened the door the from the inside this morning, and now it wont lock at all

don't bother going through the insurance. As long as the door itself isn't damaged, this will be a cheap fix.

it's not too bad really to be honest, the door is just scrapped under the lock and handle. can't understand how they didn't get into the car tho..

Yep, they can't be too talented if they couldn't break into a Civic :D

Here's a guy selling Civic coupe parts. door not pictured, but worth a shot nonetheless.

Not sure if Coupe has a specific door handle/locks. might be worth going on to DTDirl forum and asking a few Honda heads.

They did a tidy enough job on it anyway! Just searching around the net looking for a lock, was on to icetronix there, he's going to ring me back, thanks for the link.

Fortunately having locks made of butter means they're also very easy to fix. I used keep a stock of Honda locks at one stage.

The new lock barrel is easily opened up and re-pinned to match your existing key. The lock is easy enough to get out of the door too, from the inside, with the door card off.

You'll get the locks in any breaker, EG, EK, DA6, DC2 etc all have the same barrels.

    try these guys for spraying.

Altho... a handle that's purple has been sprayed already, on top of the original colour.. which will now be sprayed again. Might be a better match to get a handle the same colour from a breaker or wherever...

Handle would be sanded and primed prior to painting

cheers lads. was in the off licence where the car was parked outside. they have cctv of the F***ers trying to break into it. They were in a silver nissan micra, 5 door, like a jap import with square number plates, cant get the reg tho. they pull up right beside mine, passenger gets out, goes to his boot to get a crow bar or whatever, and started bashing the lock. he's at it for over 5 minutes, then just gives up and drives off. Brought the tape down to the station, doubt anything will happen from it, oh well!

Yet another reason to dislike Micras

ha! it was a pitty, just the glare from the street lights that was blocking the reg
