Screen picture looks different than before.

    Hopefully the correct forum:o.

After a few weeks away from the lap top that I usually use for doing stuff with my photos I returned to find that now the whole screen looks 'pulled'. The screen looks like it is being stretched from left the left and right and is distorting all graphics (type and pictures). It also doesn't look as sharp as before.
The Laptop is a 6 month old Dell and uses vista. I've gone into the View section and have played around with the type size and zoom but with no joy.
I'm not too well up on computers etc. and the person that was using it when I was away is even more clueless so now I find myself a bit lost. I don't know if it's just what happens after while, or if it's from a bug or if the person just clicked on something that they shouldn't have.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You sound as if you're looking along the right lines. What is the model type?

It's an Inspiron with intel core2 and windows Vista.
Yeah I thought it might be that simple but those options just seem to change the size of what's happening but not the effect. Imagine a 6"x4" photo that now looks about 5.5"x 5" (if that makes sense).

If you have access to a monitor, plug that in and press the key (F8 I think) that switches to the external monitor.
If the picture's ok it may be a problem LCD screen. I doubt it though with a new laptop.

What king of inspiron? Does it have integrated graphics or a graphics card? I think a graphics driver could be the problem.

Ah, this is where my knowledge goes awry. It just says Inspiron and I don't know about graphic cards. I do use Picasa on it. That like a free Photoshop programme.

Right-click a blank area of the desktop, and click
    Personalise > Display settings

Then check that the resolution is set to the native resolution of the screen (drag the slider all the way to the right).
