This may have been mentioned before but saddened to see the bikes can no-longer use the wooden bridge at Dollymount.:(

What do you mean? How is it possible to let cars through and not bicycles?

How are you prevented from using it?

Its been years since Ive been over it but the ban must have something to do with safety concerns due to the space between the timber planks, exposure to cross winds or cycle speed unsuitable for the traffic light timing and holding up traffic.

what exactly is going to stop you from using it ?

cycle speed unsuitable for the traffic light timing and holding up traffic.
There is a 15km/h speed limit on the bridge so unlikely to be that one.

Feck it like! I always just cross it. I expect that it's due to the gaps between the planks, they're afraid of cyclists getting their wheels caught and suing the council for injuries. I usually just wind, snake-like, to avoid the gaps.

A cyclist-sensing gun turret or (if my memory works) a sign saying 'cyclists dismount' :-) It was there last summer when I routinely ignored it. If I fall off my bike, it's my own fault.

It's crazy that they have never replaced or refurbished that bridge.I suppose they will when it collapses

I fell off going over this bridge about ten years ago. It had rained and the wood was slippy. I was starting off and the front wheel slipped as if on ice. I came down very heavy on my ribs on the large beam that separates the walking area from the car area. Two drivers behind me stopped and wanted to take my to hospital. But I insisted I was fine - which I was not. Feckin dangerous bridge if you have narrow profile tyres

iirc it is privately owned, and closes every Xmas day to avoid a public right of way coming into place.

I would like to start a rant about these most supid signs saying cyclist dismount. Can I?

Or is there already a rant about this somewhere on the forum.

well, it's not as if there was no other way to access the island. Plus, what is there on there anyway?... no hill.

And swimming areas and walking areas :)

I ride across it regularly, once you just go in a straight line and avoid the ruts its fine. Never even heard you couldnt!
