My friend has an old 123 merc diesel that he is restoring. He has a clutch problem and needs to get it sorted. Problem is he cannot release the gearbox from the engine, having removed bolts it is stuck. Any ideas

Forgive me if this sounds stupid is he sure all bell housing bolts are removed?....it is very easy to miss one. Secondly if all the bolts are removed press the clutch! i cant remember if there is a cable or a hydraulic cylinder.

Check for more bolts at or near the starter motor. Also it may be seized on the spigot shaft, esepcially if not used in years.Pressing the clutch if still conneted and working should work, otherwise you have a lot of jockying ahead of you !

Yeah , is stuck at spigot shaft. Can get a bar in to lever the box from the engine but can't move it more than quarter of an inch. Will keep at it and may need to get clutch back up and running to operate it:rolleyes:

If you can drop some penetrating fluid onto the spigot shaft it may free it.Otherwise you could use the protruding cluutch fork and lever it with a bar somehow !

    Good luck !
