Base layers - what do I need to know?

Am going to invest in a few short sleeve base layers (maybe also one long sleeve one) for the chilly winter running. Had a look on wiggle and there seems to be a huge variety of different variations - what features do I need to keep me warm? Some seem to be designed for other functions.

Not sure about what's on offer - but you know that Marathon Finisher top, I always wear that tucked into a pair of shorts, and throw another t-shirt over it. That's my running outfit in the winter and I've worn it even down to the freezing temp, literally. I know people wear tights and all that, but that's all a bit fancy for me.

Having said that, always nice to get new gear - hope you find what works for you!

It doesn't get very cold in Ireland, and winter gear doesn't take on the same importance it would in other countries.

I usually wear a long sleeved top during the winter. The DCM finisher shirt does the trick very well. If it gets actually cold, about 0 degrees or lower (that's Celsius, obviously) I might wear a singlet as base layer and a long sleeve top over that. That's also the temperature when I tend to wear tights rather than shorts. I certainly won't spend my money on any fancy specialised gear.

It does the trick for me. In colder climates I'd have to take more care, but I find that Irish winters hardly deserve the name.
