Why not just travel with a credit card and use ATMs?

wouldnt there be a charge every time you use an ATM over there?

    To answer the OP's question

I would advise changing this side of ' the pond '

Produce anything in dollars in the US ( even in banks or anywhere ) and you get looked at like you have two heads

Remember to the average American everyone uses $$ ( don't they ?? )

    True!

I thought though that because the banks would want euro's there to sell to the American's going to europe that I might get a better deal in there?

except the percentage of americans that have actually travelled outside the country is very low...so they have a little demand for it.

infact some americans would even have problems finding Ireland on a map..... As far as they are concerned ...they have America, little America(Canada) and mexico (South America)...and the oil country that they invaded.

The main reason for changing over here is because many banks in the US only change money in their main branches. So unless you're in a large city, it can be difficult to change money except through specialist bureaux de change and these guy charge nicely for their service.

If you insist on carrying cash, your local ccredit union has the best rates.

Get a credit card and peg it all on it. Easiest and cheapest way by a street.

Or else take an Irish laser card (cirrus) and withdraw dollars from an ATM over there. Taking Euros with a view to changing currency in the US is a joke, either do the above or else buy dollars in Ireland now and take them with you especially as the Dollar is very low against the Euro now.

Taking a big amount of dollars in cash will raise suspicions with US Immigration also and if a single male and travelling alone with $3 - $4k you are immediately targeted as a potential illegal immigrant. Last time I went over I got taken into the interview room in Shannon and really quizzed up, and I think having a large sum of cash contributed to me raising suspicions with them. A thousand dollars is enough to carry really, fire the rest on a credit card or else withdraw money over there, Bank fees maybe about €5 per transaction so when withdrawing withdraw alot, no $50 or $20 dollar transactions like we are used to at home here.
