Insurance as named driver?

Apologies for the (probably) stupid question, I'm completely new to this.

Just got my first provisional this morning. I live in Kildare and want to get experience driving my dad's car when I'm home in Waterford - what is the procedure for doing this? I'm asking for 'named driver' insurance right? Would insurance companies allow for a 6 month period or do you have to go for the full year?

Also, how does such a rate compare to a fully comp quote for me as sole driver on my own vehicle. I will be 26 when I buy the car, and have been quoted 1350 for a 1.4.

    Thanks!

If I remember correctly it cost around €90 for me to be added as a named driver for the year.

I'm a 25 year old female and it cost me €80 to be insured on my mother's car for ten months (til the end of the current policy). I was pretty happy with that.
