Please help me!!! I'm cracking up! I don't know what to believe!

I've just qualified as a teacher and there's no jobs going at all. I'm currently staying at home with my parents, I'm 25. I was going to try and wait it out and see if a job turns up but this is getting less and less likely every day. I want to apply for the dole and live at home for the time being, but my mother is wary of this. She's worried that the dole office will start to investigate herself and my father's money. We're not rich, but my mother has a job where she (only sometimes) gets paid cash in hand. My father is unemployed and on the dole.

What I want to know is- would they investigate my parents finances if I were to apply for the dole and live at home?

    OR...

Would I be better off renting a room in a house and live there- I'd get more dole money wouldn't I?

    Please help, I'm so headwrecking.

What does means test mean? And would they means test my parents too even though I'm 25?

Ok, so I'll get means tested if I live at home, but would my parents be means tested also?

Right firstly.....what kinda teacher are you and no offence or anything, but you say your a teacher should.nt you no how to find answers and all of them sort of skills...Anyway back to the topic...means tested basically means you will get your dole form to fill in at your local dole office...it will ask for your details such as your name date of birth and all that....now the is a section asking how much money your earn, thats if you do...and on the form it asks if you live with anyone else,it will ask what relationship they are to you...it does.nt matter who it your Ma you da a brother or a sister or an aunt or an uncle or a granny or grandad..anywho on the form it will ask what the people that live with you earn,so your Ma earns x amount and your da presumably earns 204.30 per week, and if anyone else lives with ya put their details down also ok...your da's money would.nt be affected, however i would advise you to put down an exact weekly amount...and whatever you do not whatever the circumstances write on the form that your Ma gets money cash in hand because that is illegal and them you will have the taxman knocking on your parents door, and your Ma could face a fine or imprisonment...also the welfare could ask you to come back with proof of payments of your Ma's and da's and if anyone else lives in the same household of ya.ie-proof of income.and if anyone else in your household is in receipt of social welfare payment their pay wont be affected...anyway the reason they ask for these details is to see how much dole payment they will give you...as you probably know the full flat rate payment of any social welfare payments is 204.30 excluding some payments depending on circumstances....they could just give you the half rate payment which is 135.00 because you live at home and the social welfare could say you get fed by your parents and all sort of stuff like that...the reason why i have so much knowledge of this is because i get the disability allowance, free travel, dfsa allowance, and a few other perks plus a medical card which you would also be entitled to...i'm 18 if you would like to know...PLEASE NOTE: all this information is not legal information..e&oe...WARNING:this is not legal advice,i'm not responsible for any damages caused to you or any other parties associated with.........all info copyright by i-guy ® ©...........another post about another thing will follow.....

Once you turn 25 your parents' income does not come into play for your means test.

iguy, state benefits are pretty confusing to someone who's never been in receipt of them or know anyone to guide them through. There's a lot of misinformation circulating around. Finally, teachers are human beings too - and just because someone knows enough about one thing to teach others doesn't mean that they know everything in the world :)

    Good luck, OP.

You could just pm him/her with the details of the job rather than waiting for him/her to pm you :)

Wrong - there is still a means test - however they only check your own means (and that of your partner if applicable) - not your parents'

+1 there is a mean test on the applicant at any age for JSA but once your over 25 your parents arent mean tested
