First step would be to write a business plan.

But you should have a look here for some good information http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055297401

Check with your local County Enterprise Board as they regularly run Start Your Own Business courses which are usually reasonably priced. This will give you a good idea as to whether your idea is a goer or not.

Find an accountant. They know everything.

Its probably worth getting a mentor if you really have no idea about setting up and running a business. Write your business plan and then ask any people you know who are successful in business to go over it and make suggestions. Then talk to your local enterprise board who can hook you up with a mentor.

Heres a great piece of advice.

Spend a few nights reading as many past threads on this forum as you can.
You'd be amazed at what you'll learn, and its all free.

if you do decide to proceed, check out http://www.dit.ie/hothouse/ they run a year long programme (2 days per month) on setting up the busienss. You are with 16 other like minded people on the course. A very good course. I was on it about three / four years ago and found it very useful. EI is invovled, so it can open the door to investment / advice

Set up a separate bank account and feed everything through it. Agree with other comments about EI and especially the SYOB courses. I'd also touch base with an accountant for the financial stuff. Most of them won't charge you for a simple chat. Also look at the Welfare support as you may be entitled to something starting out. And as others have said start thinking about the business plan. Best of luck.
